The Yankee-killing Astros are swept out of the MLB playoffs by the surging Tigers

Ding dong, the Astros are gone.

The Tigers defeated the Yankees’ biggest postseason thorn, the Astros, on Wednesday, sweeping Houston out of the playoffs in Game 2 of the American League Wild Card Series.

Detroit opened the ballgame with a four-run eighth inning that gave the Tigers a 5-2 victory.

They now advance to face the Guardians in the ALDS.

The Astros’ loss in the wild-card round means the ballclub will not appear in the ALCS this postseason for the first time since 2016.

Yankees fans were certainly happy with the result after Houston proved to be a regular Yankee-killer in the postseason.

Since 2015, the Yankees have made the playoffs six times and were knocked out of the postseason by the Astros in four of those years.

To add to the wild narrative surrounding the Tigers emerging as the little engine that could make it late in the season, manager AJ Hinch was at the helm of Houston – and the sign-stealing of the 2017 World Series team – before he took the job with the Tigers in 2020.

Down 2-1 early in the eighth quarter, two Tigers batters reached base with one out before Astros reliever Ryan Pressly threw a wild pitch that allowed a run to score to bring the game to two.

Andy Ibáñez then hit a sharp drive to left field, driving in three runs to give the Tigers the lead for good.

According to Sarah Langs, it was the first green pinch hit in the eighth inning or later in the Tigers’ postseason history.

“I’m not sure who, but someone got the Tigers hot!” Hinch said during the postgame celebration.

The Tigers were 10 games out of a playoff spot on August 11, but ultimately lost 33-13.
