The White Sox set the MLB’s modern futility record with 120 losses, tying it with the 1962 Mets.

SAN DIEGO – The Chicago White Sox tied the 1962-inducted New York Mets’ MLB record of 120 losses since 1900 on Sunday when they beat the San Diego Padres 4-2, scoring three runs in the eighth inning and capped by Fernando Tatis Jr.’s massive home run.

The White Sox (36-120) had taken a 2-1 lead thanks to home runs by Korey Lee and Miguel Vargas against Yu Darvish, but that lead quickly disappeared in the eighth inning.

This loss came one day after the White Sox tied the American League record of 119 losses set by the Detroit Tigers in 2003.

The 1899 Cleveland Spiders hold the major league losing record at 20-134.

Interim manager Grady Sizemore did not speak to the team again afterward.

“No loss is good,” he said. “It’s not something we’re focused on. I think everyone outside of this clubhouse is more obsessed with it than we are. We want to put this behind us and get ready for the series at home.”

With another loss in their final six games, the White Sox will tie the modern record. They finish the season with three home games against the Los Angeles Angels, starting Tuesday night, and three wins at Detroit, which is in the running for the AL wild card.

“I guess when you lose 120 it’s easier to brush it off, but it’s (stinky) to go through it, but that’s where we are,” said veteran Andrew Benintendi.

The Padres (90-66) achieved their first 90-win season since 2010, when they finished 90-72, but missed the postseason due to a brutal September slump.

The Padres reduced their magic number to one, securing their third postseason berth since 2020.

The Padres have their fate in their own hands as they begin a three-game series against the NL West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday night, but they would need to win to clinch the division title. While the Dodgers hold a three-game lead over the Padres, San Diego has the tiebreaker. San Diego has a three-game lead over Arizona and is the NL’s top wild card. The Padres finish three games at Arizona next weekend.

Some of the 45,197 fans in the sold-out stadium began chanting “Beat LA!” as Padres players and staff cheered fans after the final home game of the regular season. San Diego set a franchise attendance record of 3,314,593 fans for 80 games.

“We’ve never been down and that’s probably been the case since the first week we played baseball this year,” Tatis said. “What we’ve done here is really special. We have the talent to make it to the end. But it’s time to take each day one day at a time.”

The Padres tied the game at 2-2 when Donovan Solano and pinch hitter Luis Arraez hit consecutive doubles in the first inning against Fraser Ellard (2-3). Arraez advanced on a wild pitch and scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly by Jurickson Profar.

Then Tatis hit a huge hit into the left-field stands, his 20th home run of the season.

“It was an incredible feeling. After I hit the ball, it felt like I had shown it,” said Tatis, who made a wild run after the 117-yard hit and also stuttered his way to third base.

White Sox rookie Sean Burke, in just his third major league appearance and second start, held the Padres to one run and two hits in six innings, striking out eight players and walking one.

“Burke pitched a heck of a game,” Benintendi said. “They have a lot of good hitters in their lineup, guys who have been playing for a long time, and once they take over with that bullpen, it seems pretty much over at this point.”

Lee, who grew up in northern San Diego County, hit a line-shot home run to left with one out in the third inning, his 11th.

Profar tied the game when he hit a single to left outfield in the bottom of the inning, his 24th and his career-best effort to date.

The White Sox took the lead again with Vargas’ home run to left center field with one out in the sixth inning, his fifth.

Darvish became the first Japanese-born player to reach 2,000 career strikeouts when he struck out Jacob Amaya in the third inning. With nine strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings on Sunday, he increased his 12-season MLB total to (2003). He allowed nine walks while allowing two runs and three hits.

Robert Suarez, who has been struggling lately, pitched the ninth inning for his 34th save.
