The Wayne Women’s Mobile Health Unit now offers free nursing services on Tuesdays

DETROIT (WXYZ) — Tuesday was an exciting day for the city of Detroit as the Wayne Women’s Mobile Health Unit opened.

The RV unit is now located at Pastor Krafus Walker’s Church of God in Christ’s Faith Redemption Center every Tuesday and offers free health services.

Lynn Bell was one of the first patients at the opening on Tuesday.

She told us that the lack of access to health services for women in Detroit “harmful. Some people are afraid to go to the doctor.”

The mobile health unit in the motorhome is essentially a doctor’s office on wheels.

Services offered include women’s preventive care, pre-pregnancy health screenings, prenatal care, contraception services and more.

“We don’t have to feel like we’re being left behind, we don’t have to feel like we’re falling through the cracks. Even if we can’t go to a church service, we can come to a community like this,” Bell said of the concept.

Dr. Amy Wright is the medical director of the Women’s Mobile Health Unit.

When asked why they decided to create a department focused exclusively on women, she replied: “There is a significant crisis in the health of pregnant women and newborns around the world, especially in the United States. We can help a woman have a healthy pregnancy, which ultimately benefits the baby, society and the community.”

Wright said her team is also working to connect patients with services beyond physical care, such as helping patients access food banks, specialty care and mental health resources when needed.

“This is about access,” said Wright. “The biggest problem is why women do not seek prenatal care. The reason is that there is no doctor nearby in their neighborhood. Without this care, the risk of complications increases.”

Wright said the goal is to eventually offer the RV unit five days a week in five different areas of Detroit that lack medical care.

“We bring care to the patients,” said Wright.

You can drop by or make an appointment in advance. The unit is open on Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

If you have a question or need help, this is an option for you.

“If you know about it, don’t be ashamed to come here. Come out.” Bell said. “Just be there for yourself so you can be there for your family.”
