The unseasonably warm weather continues

Record and near-record heat will spread across parts of New Mexico through Friday. However, the warm weather will last until early October.

A cold front moved across New Mexico last night, but isn’t having much of an impact on temperatures today. In fact, southeastern New Mexico is the only part of the state that experiences cooler temperatures. Across the rest of the state, temperatures will be a degree or two warmer today than yesterday. It’s also another sunny and dry day across New Mexico. Thanks to the dry air, temperatures will cool down quickly this evening and the day will start cool on Thursday. High pressure will begin to develop across the state Thursday afternoon, and this could lead to record and near-record temperatures throughout central and northwestern New Mexico.

On Friday, another backdoor front is moving into eastern New Mexico. Here too there will only be a very slight cooling in the eastern part of the state, but there will also be isolated storm risks in the northern mountains and into the East Mountains. However, most of the rain will likely evaporate before reaching the ground. Albuquerque is expected to experience near-record heat Friday afternoon before the front brings in gusty East Canyon winds up to 30 mph.

This weekend, temperatures across the state will be slightly cooler, but still well above normal for late September. A scattered shower or two will again be possible only in the mountains, from the northern mountains to the Sacramentos. Next Monday, another weak cold front will arrive, which will cause a slight drop in temperature again until next Tuesday, but the above-average warmth will last into October.
