The top 5 longest-lasting cars are all Toyotas

A study of more than 400 million cars, trucks and SUVs found that the Toyota Tundra is the light vehicle most likely to reach 250,000 miles, with Ram’s 3500 heavy-duty truck the best overall

  • A study of the longest-lasting cars, SUVs and pickup trucks in America found that Toyotas achieved the highest mileage of 250,000 miles.
  • The Tundra was rated as the most durable of all light vehicles, with a 37 percent chance of reaching the 250,000 mark, closely followed by the Sequoia and the 4Runner.
  • Toyota dominates the light-duty vehicle list, but Ram’s 3500 heavy-duty truck will likely last even longer than 250,000 miles.

You want a vehicle that might last longer than you? Then buy a Toyota, not one from a European or Korean automaker. That’s the clear message from a new study that looked at the longest-lasting cars, trucks and SUVs in America to find out which ones are most likely to reach 250,000 miles (402,000 km).

For this year’s Longest-Lasting Cars study, analysts at iSeeCars analyzed data from 402 million vehicles and created a computer model that found that most cars barely make it to that mark. Only 8.6 percent will ever reach a quarter of a million miles on the clock. However, certain Toyota models are four times more likely to achieve that feat.

King of the light passenger cars that can’t be eliminated is the Toyota Tundra, which has a 36.6 percent chance of reaching 250,000, closely followed by its Sequoia brother at 36.4 percent. But they’re far from the only Toyotas on the list, which is dominated by the Japanese automaker, with a little help from its luxury division, Lexus.

Toyota takes all five of the top spots on the longest-lasting vehicles chart. The 4Runner, Tacoma and Highlander follow the Tundra and Sequoia in that order, and all have at least a 26 percent chance of reaching 250,000 miles. The automaker’s Avalon and Lexus GX finished eighth and ninth, with the Highlander coming in at No. 17, the Camry at No. 21 and the Prius at No. 25.

That means 10 out of 30 spots are taken by Toyota vehicles, a feat no other automaker can match. However, Honda (including Acura) managed to get seven models into the top 30 and GM secured six spots in a study that found that our cars can travel great distances over their lifetime, despite becoming more complex with each passing year.

“Modern vehicles are becoming more and more durable. Thirty models offer a chance of between 12 and 36 percent of reaching a quarter of a million miles,” says Karl Brauer, an analyst at iSeeCars. His team had to change the definition of durability from 200,000 miles (322,000 km) to 250,000 miles a few years ago to adapt it to the endurance of modern vehicles.

“Many consumers still believe that a car’s useful life ends at 100,000 miles (161,000 km). But the top nine cars on this year’s list have a better than 20 percent chance of reaching 250,000 miles.”

The study found that SUVs not only look tough, but are built that way, and can cover many more miles than sedans. While SUVs on average have a 7.8 percent chance of reaching 250,000, and the top five models all have at least a 20 percent chance, the average sedan has just a 5.4 percent chance of reaching a quarter of a million, and only one in 11 cars has a 22 percent chance. It’s no surprise that it’s a Toyota, although the Avalon far outperformed the same manufacturer’s Corolla at just 7.8 percent.

But if you really want a vehicle that will still perform when you’re underground, you’ll need to get a heavy-duty truck, and that’s a Ram 3500. The Stellantis pickup has a 42.6 percent chance of lasting 250,000 miles, compared to a segment average of 19.4 percent and just 11.5 percent for its sibling, the Ram 1500.

You can scroll down to see the full tables for each segment, but you might notice a shocking detail: there’s not a single car from a European or Korean automaker on any of the lists.
