The “Tonight Show” on NBC will be reduced to four days a week, the Friday show will be cancelled

The late-night TV landscape continues to shrink, with NBC’s Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon the latest entry regarding the change in the production schedule.

According to NBC, the new fall season will begin with Tonight Show will only air four new episodes per week Monday through Thursday, with a repeat on Friday night. While the show took a break on Fridays last summer, previous seasons aired new episodes five days a week.

ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! has only aired new episodes four days a week for years (and Kimmel has also taken summers off in recent years), as has CBS’ Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Fallon’s appearance on NBC, Late Night – Seth Meyersand Comedy Central’s The daily show are also on a four-day plan, which The Tonight Show the only one left.

Late-night shows have found themselves in a difficult situation in recent years due to changing viewing habits. At CBS Late Late Show ended with the departure of James Corden last year and was replaced by the comedic game show After midnightwhich costs significantly less to produce.

And earlier this year, Meyers’ show on NBC lost its house band amid extensive budget cuts.

Fallon, however, is not going anywhere anytime soon. He signed a new contract with NBC to keep him behind the desk at The Tonight Show until 2028.
