Still need school supplies or clothes? Tax-free weekend starts in Texas this Friday. Here’s everything you need to know about the holiday.

When is the tax-free weekend?

This year’s sales tax-free day in Texas begins on Friday and lasts until midnight on Sunday.

What is a tax-free weekend?

According to the Texas Auditor’s website, the office encourages all taxpayers to support Texas businesses while saving money on tax-free purchases of everything from clothing to school supplies and more.

“Qualified items can be purchased tax-free in a store or from an online or catalog retailer doing business in Texas,” the website states. “In most cases, you do not need to provide the seller with an exemption certificate to purchase qualified items tax-free.”

The sales tax exemption only applies to certain items you purchase during the holidays.

What can I buy tax-free?

During the annual tax-free weekend, you can purchase most clothing, shoes, school supplies and backpacks for less than $100.

“During the holidays, you may purchase eligible items in-store, online, by phone, by mail, as a custom order, or by other means,” the website states. “The sale of the item must occur during the specified time period.”

“The date of purchase is easy to determine when buying in-store, but becomes more complicated when buying remotely. The buyer must have paid for the item within the deadline, even though the item may not be delivered until after the deadline has expired.”

During the VAT exemption period, you do not need to provide an exemption certificate to the seller. The exemption applies to each eligible item and there is no limit on the number of eligible items you can purchase.
