Joe Dantes dark comedy favorite The suburbs comes to the screen with a TV series adaptation for peacockAnd Keke Palmer (No) is set to star in the series.
Variety reports that The suburbs was ordered directly as a series by Peacock. Celeste Hughey (“Palm Royale,” “Dead to Me,” “High Fidelity”) adapts Dante’s film for television.
Here is a particularly cool excerpt from the website’s report: “Like the film, the series is shot on the outdoor lot of Universal Studios.” The official synopsis of the show gives a taste…
“Located in today’s suburbs, The suburbs follows a young couple who returns to the man’s parents’ home.
“Their world is turned upside down when new neighbors move in next door and reveal the cul-de-sac’s old secrets. Plus, new deadly threats shatter the illusion of their quiet little neighborhood.”
Seth MacFarlane will executive produce along with Brian Grazer of Imagine Entertainment.
Keke Palmer stars in the lead role and is also an executive producer.
Joe Dante’s original film starred Tom Hanks, Carrie Fisher, Bruce Dern, Rick Ducommun and Corey Feldman. The film revolves around aAn overworked suburbanite and his neighbors are convinced that the new family on the block is part of a murderous satanic cult.
Brian Keiper celebrated 35 years The suburbs here on Bloody Disgusting earlier this year. He wrote: “Joe Dante had made horror comedies before –Piranha (1978), The howling (1981) and Gremlins (1984) are certainly all suitable, but The suburbs was something different. It is first and foremost a comedy, full of often exaggerated absurd humor, with horror woven into it like the dark threads of a tapestry, giving the film its very unique character.”
