You may not know it, but Eli Roth has directed a Borderlands movie based on the popular video game series, which hits theaters this week. The official reviews embargo ends on August 8, but social impressions have been running rampant, and they aren’t the best.
The film doesn’t adapt a specific Borderlands story, but is set in the world of Pandora and the land’s lore. A major recognizable element is Jack Black as Claptrap, the game’s robot leader and your character’s sidekick. The most important observation seems to be the comparison between this and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, which was a reinvention of the team from the comics.
Borderlands is undoubtedly one of the worst films of the year. Fans will be upset at how misrepresented the characters are (especially Tina), casual moviegoers will be unimpressed by how much the film feels like a half-baked GOTG rip-off.

The social media embargo has now been lifted and I can say that #BorderlandsFilm has an exceptional level of detail for those who have played the video games, but I don’t know if that’s enough to stop people from calling it a Guardians of the Galaxy rip-off. pic.twitter.com/PiShS2NVyC

Borderlands feels like what some out-of-touch executive thinks the “cool kids” will find appealing. There isn’t a single serious moment from the characters, just obnoxious lines that feel dated as soon as they come out of the actors’ mouths. It’s not even so bad that it’s good, it’s just a complete mess. pic.twitter.com/M7WCc1cUj3

Oh hey, I can tell you, I saw #BorderlandsFilm now and that it’s really bad. I really wanted to like it, but an uninspired plot + several lame performances + being stuck in a weird place where it looks expensive and cheap at the same time make it a huge letdown. pic.twitter.com/nek6r0CuTm

Not everything was gloomy for the would-be end-of-summer blockbuster. There were actually some positives. Fans praised the performances of Jack Black and Cate Blanchett, and fans of the franchise will love the Easter eggs.
OK that #BorderlandsFilm was better than I expected, BUT I was expecting 6/10.
DON’T TELL ANYTHING
The plot is actually quite a mess #Borderlands Fashion, but the humor and heart are there. LOTS of fanservice moments, but ultimately I don’t know if it will resonate. 6.75/10— Ki11er Six (@Ki11ersix) 7 August 2024
Last year’s trend of successful video game adaptations may face some obstacles due to the Borderlands movie, but we’ll see about that soon.
“Borderlands” starring Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Edgar Ramírez, Ariana Greenblatt, Florian Munteanu, Gina Gershon and Jamie Lee Curtis will be released in theaters on August 9.
