The Secret Service temporarily closes Judy Lowe Park

The Judy Lowe Neighborhood Park at 1 & 7 E. Del Ray Avenue in Alexandria will remain closed until further notice. Alexandria city officials say these closures are at the request of the U.S. Secret Service.

In addition to the park, the block of E. Del Ray Ave. between Commonwealth Ave. and Clyde Ave. will be closed to local traffic only.

According to Alexandria city officials, the following regulations will be introduced

  • A significant USSS presence will be maintained in the area to provide security for a Secret Service Protectee.
  • The parking area is cordoned off and monitored by the police around the clock.
  • Street parking is not permitted in the residential block of E. Del Ray Ave. and on the east side of the 2200 block of Commonwealth Ave.
  • Commonwealth Avenue lanes, bike lanes and sidewalks remain open.
  • E. Del Ray Ave. residents and their guests can come and go with minimal disruption from USSS or the Alexandria Police Department (APD).

No public reason was given for the closure. In an email, a Secret Service official told 7News:

For operational security reasons, U.S. intelligence does not discuss the means or methods used for our protective operations.

The U.S. Secret Service is working closely with our partners at the Alexandria Police Department to ensure that residents and visitors to the area are informed of how these temporary closures may impact them.
