It may be hard to believe, but the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris will end on August 11 and the Paralympics on September 8. After the medal competitions, the Olympic and Paralympic participants will head home… and they will all be taking a new phone with them.
As with previous Olympic Games, Samsung is a sponsor and has gifted each Olympic and Paralympic athlete a special edition of its latest foldable flip phone. It’s aptly named the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 Olympic Edition and comes complete with a special edition leather flip case. It’s also a very limited edition, with only around 17,000 made.
There’s a good chance you’ve seen an unboxing of it on social media, especially if you’re on Olympic TikTok. If you’ve been following the Games, besides the immense talent of each individual athlete, everyone who wins bronze, silver or gold has one thing in common: A victory selfie taken with a small, square-looking yellow phone – the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6.
The Galaxy Z Flip 6 Olympic Edition looks a lot like the version you and I can buy, and you can read our in-depth review of the Z Flip 6. It’s the same shade of yellow that’s available to everyone, with some custom graphics on the back – namely the Olympic and Paralympic logos, noting that Samsung is an official sponsor.
Inside the device, you’ll find the same Samsung OneUI on Android and plenty of pre-installed apps that might come in handy in the Olympic Village. It also has a custom home screen with a note from Samsung to the Paralympics and Olympic competitors. The case itself shows a custom wallpaper on the front, offering a nice pop of color and some protection between the mix of plastic and leather. You can watch us unbox the Galaxy Z Flip 6 Olympic Edition below.
Other than that, it’s the same Galaxy Z Flip 6, with a 3.4-inch cover screen and a 6.7-inch main screen, both AMOLEDs for a vibrant viewing experience. As for the cameras, two lenses on the front come in handy when you’re taking an Olympic medal-worthy selfie or just shooting photos on a regular day. The 50-megapixel wide-angle and 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lenses both use the cover screen as a simple viewfinder.
Above you can see some promotional photos of athletes taking a selfie on the podium on one of the biggest stages in the world with the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 Olympic Edition. If you want to see the Olympic Edition of this foldable phone, or own one and aren’t an Olympic or Paralympic competitor, some of them have popped up on resale sites like eBay.
As I write this, I see a good handful of these on eBay – some brand new in the box and others slightly used – for as little as $1,500, but many with higher bids. You can see the search results for the phone here; some even pull up the included e-SIM with data to get you started.
Of course, if you want to take a winning selfie yourself, you can also get a standard Galaxy Z Flip 6, which offers many of the same features but without the Paralympic or Olympic logos and no limited edition case. At Samsung, the price of the Galaxy Z Flip 6 starts at $1,099, but as always, there are several special offers and discounts.
