‘The Royal Wedding’ honors Cameron Boyce and reveals the franchise’s wonderful next chapter

The big day for Mal and Ben was on Friday with the premiere of Descendants: The Royal Weddingbut the eagerly awaited ceremony did not go entirely smoothly.

Although Audrey did her best as Mal’s official wedding planner – which is crazy considering she herself has dreamed of marrying Ben for years – chaos reigned from the start. Dude the dog chased Maleficent through the castle, Snow White’s doves literally flew out of the coop and, oh yeah, Hades accidentally set the venue on fire. (Mal just had to say “Nothing could ruin this day”, right?)

Refusing to marry without her entire family present, Mal returned to the Isle of the Lost to bring Hades back to Auradon. But before she and the VKs returned to their old haunts, Jay and Evie gave Mal an early wedding gift – a charm bracelet with all of their family crests, including that of Carlos (played by the late Cameron Boyce). It represents “the four VKs, forever bound together,” Evie explained.

With the help of Uma, who expanded to put out the fire Hades left on the bridge, the VKs arrived at the new and improved island (“I love that the island has really blossomed!”) to meet with Mal’s father. Two thugs, presumably the sons of Pain and Panic, tried to block Mal’s entrance to Hades’ lair, but their dragon form was a little harder to fend off.

Hades explained that his literal breakdown was due to a complete misunderstanding, and that even he isn’t reckless enough to ruin the happiest day of his daughter’s life. When Ben saw how happy Mal was with her father by her side, he suggested they get married right then and there – after the Fairy Godmother arrived with Belle and King Adam in tow, of course. And so, Ben and Mal became man and wife, all to the tune of an infectious new earworm called “Feeling the Love.” Watch it all in the video below:

But wait, there’s more! After exchanging vows and dancing the night away, Mal and Ben excused themselves to take a stroll in the moonlight. “So this is what a happy ending feels like?” he asked, to which she replied, “For us? Yes. But somewhere, another story could be beginning.”

The camera then panned to a bunch of white roses – painted red, of course – and took us down the rabbit hole before fading to black. Although Disney Channel hasn’t officially announced anything yet, it’s safe to assume we’re seeing a Descendants 4 sometime with a relative of Alice in WonderlandThe Queen of Hearts is the main protagonist.

OK, let’s talk: Do you think Mal and Ben’s story had a fitting ending? How much did that Carlos moment touch you? And what do you think about the Queen of Hearts’ descendants taking the lead in a possible Descendants 4? Rate the special below, then Leave a comment with your full review.
