The remnants of Debby are knocking down trees and causing power outages across New York. Here’s a look at the damage.

NEW YORK – After a wet week, strong winds from the remains of Debby caused damage throughout New York City and the surrounding area on Friday.

A tornado occurred in Ulster Countyand throughout the Tri-State Area, storms downed trees and power lines, leaving thousands of people without power and causing chaos for commuters.

Power outage in Bronx neighborhood after tree falls on power lines

The New York City Emergency Management Agency said it received more than 360 reports of fallen trees across the city during Friday’s storm.

When Woodlawn resident Kieran Hogan returned home from work, he found a tree blocking his front door.

“Yes, it was windy, but I didn’t expect that,” he said.

The trunk was uprooted across East 234th Street, off Katonah Avenue, and took down a power pole and power lines.

“I think it was held up by the power lines and then at some point it broke because this one broke and everything fell down,” said neighbor Eugene Dana.

No one was injured, but about half a dozen parked cars were hit.

“Hopefully the insurance company can do something about it,” Dana said.

Hundreds of Woodlawn residents are preparing for a night without power. Even some traffic lights at surrounding intersections were out.

“The fridge doesn’t have power, so I guess the food will spoil. So, I don’t know, maybe we’ll go to a hotel or something,” Dana said.

Winds knock down hundreds of trees across New York

Throughout the day, winds toppled trees from the Bronx to Brooklyn to Queens, with branches snapping a power pole and burying at least two cars on Saint Alstyne Avenue in Corona.

“My concern is that if this falls, the lines are still live, it could hit my neighbor’s house and fall on my house, and then we’ll have to get out of there,” said Bob Massano, a Corona resident.

A huge tree fell on a house in Auburndale. Fortunately, no one was inside.

“I need to repair the roof and siding,” said the homeowner.

The mayor had previously reminded New Yorkers that the risk of falling trees was greater because the ground was still wet from the rain earlier in the week.

The OEM said service requests will be handled throughout the night, so if you see storm damage in your neighborhood, call 311.
