The power of education in the European Sports Charter and the Olympic Charter

Sport is a fundamental tool for teaching human rights and democracy. Physical education and sport, accessible to all, lead to healthier, more inclusive societies. Education in and through sport is a fundamental principle of both the Council of Europe’s European Sports Charter and the Olympic Charter.

The European Sports Charter (Article 10) states: “In order to protect and promote the right to sport, it is necessary (…) to ensure that access to Development of physical, mental and ethical competencies through physical education and sport both in the education system and in other aspects of social life, (and) ensure that everyone has adequate opportunities to benefit from physical education and to practice sport.”

The Olympic Charter (Article 2) affirms that “The role of the IOC is to (…) Promote and support initiatives that combine sport with culture and education.”

On the occasion of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Enlarged Partial Agreement on Sport (EPAS) is dedicating a series to the shared values ​​of the European Sports Charter and the Olympic Charter.
