The owner of MN Wild is adding a hotel to its Xcel Energy Center modernization plan

Minnesota Wild owner Craig Leipold is expanding his plans to renovate the Xcel Energy Center to include building a 650-room convention center hotel.

It originally included plans to renovate the adjacent RiverCentre, a parking ramp and a bridge along Kellogg Boulevard. So far, the cost has been estimated at around $250 million to $300 million.

The price will now rise, said Leipold, but he did not say by how much. A 650-room hotel would exceed the size of the 410-room InterContinental Saint Paul Riverfront Hotel already downtown.

“The entire project is great for downtown St. Paul, and that doesn’t just apply to the arena,” Leipold said. “It’s a lot of stuff, so we think it’s great for downtown. “It’s good for our fans, good for our market and we’re pushing hard this year.”

Leipold said the Wild may contribute up to $250 million in funding and seek additional support from the state. But he said it’s unclear what the chances are of getting that support given the November election.

Gov. Tim Walz’s office said it had not received details about the latest proposal.

“We’re trying to sell out the Legislature and the governor,” Leipold said. “The problem is that no one knows who will run the legislature: Republicans or Democrats. We don’t know who the governor will be. We are currently in a difficult situation. But ultimately we have to carry out the renovation and modernization measures in this area.”
