The Norwegian royal family will not attend Princess Märtha Louise’s wedding photos

There may be no photo opportunity with other members of the Norwegian royal family at the wedding of Princess Märtha Louise of Norway next week.

The only daughter of King Harald and Queen Sonja will marry shaman Durek Verrett on August 31 at the Hotel Union i Geiranger in Norway. Hello! The magazine announced that it will cover the wedding. The Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK) also reported that the wedding’s television rights are tied to Netflix, according to an English translation.

Due to the exclusivity of the alleged agreements, the Norwegian royal family’s head of communications, Guri Varpe, told NRK that members of the royal family would not allow themselves to be photographed or filmed by the two media outlets, as the other press did not have access to them.

“Here an important member of the Norwegian royal family is breaking with a long and good tradition,” Reidun Kjelling Nybø of the Norwegian Editors’ Association told NRK. “Major events were documented through Norwegian mass media such as NTB and NRK on behalf of the entire press, which passed the images on to the public and to other editorial offices, including foreign ones, that wanted them.”

The newspaper said that other media “will have limited access to the wedding and will not be able to document the wedding.” According to NRK, the public and press will see Princess Märtha Louise, 52, and Durek, 49, when they step out after their wedding to greet well-wishers. Afterwards, “one or more photos of the bride and groom with their family” will be distributed. Photos of the wedding itself come from Hello!said NRK.

The hint could mean that the family photo shows Princess Märtha Louise’s daughters, Maud Angelica (21), Leah Isadora (19) and Emma Tallulah (15), whom she has with her late ex-husband Ari Behn.

“We find this very regrettable. We are very disappointed about it. And actually terribly surprised. This is a new image in the Norwegian public and a new turn of events for the Norwegian princess,” NTB news editor Christina Dorthellinger told the outlet.

“It would be historic if we did not have this access. We have been present at all major public events, celebrations and anniversaries related to the Norwegian royal family since King Haakon arrived in Norway in November 1905,” Dorthellinger added, referring to King Harald’s grandfather, who ruled from 1905 until his death in 1957.

In May 2019, Princess Märtha Louise announced her relationship with Durek, a sixth-generation American shaman who, according to his website, has a celebrity clientele. The two shared that they would get engaged in June 2022, and in September 2023, the couple announced that they would marry the following summer on August 31 in Norway.

In April, both Märtha Louise and Durek denounced “lies” in the press ahead of their wedding. Märtha Louise claimed that her fiancé’s mother had allegedly spread false information about his childhood in California, while Durek said they were “drawing a line under it” to focus on their future together.

“We are focused on creating a wedding that reflects the depth of our love and are full of excitement and joy for the celebrations ahead. Thank you for your understanding as we embark on this beautiful journey together and celebrate our love that culminates with our wedding in Geiranger,” he wrote on Instagram.

In June, the spiritual leader, whose website says his “teachings have influenced thousands,” including Gwyneth Paltrow and Nina Dobrev, announced that the couple would be married by parish priest Margit Lovise Holte. Reverend Michael Beckwith will perform the ceremony and deliver a greeting.

“We look back on this beautiful day with great joy,” Durek wrote under a photo on Instagram.

Princess Märtha Louise’s alleged media arrangements surrounding her wedding may be possible because she is no longer an active member of the royal family. The Norwegian royal family announced in November 2022 that she would give up the royal role she inherited at birth in order to be able to more freely pursue other interests without the restrictions of belonging to the crown.

“Princess Märtha Louise wishes to make a clearer distinction between her own activities and her relationship with the Norwegian Royal House. The Princess has therefore decided, in consultation with His Majesty the King and other close family members, that she will not perform any official duties for the Royal House at this time,” the palace said in a statement at the time.

Princess Märtha Louise gave up her patronage but was allowed to keep her princess title.

The statement said Märtha Louise and Durek “want a clearer distinction between their activities and the Norwegian Royal Family” and would not use their princess title on social media, in media work or for other commercial purposes, or refer to other members of the royal family. An exception was made for Märtha Louise’s @PrincessMarthaLouise handle, although she now maintains a different account.

“The King and Queen would like to thank Princess Märtha Louise for the important work she has done in her official capacity over several decades. She has carried out her duties with warmth, care and great commitment,” the statement said.

The last major wedding of the Norwegian royal family was the wedding of Märtha Louise’s younger brother, Crown Prince Haakon, to Mette-Marit Tjessem Høiby, now known as Crown Princess Mette-Marit, in 2001.

However, Princess Märtha Louise’s retirement from her royal role in 2022 had no impact on the line of succession. Absolute primogeniture, the right to rule regardless of gender, was only enshrined in Norway’s constitution in 1990. This means that Crown Prince Haakon, 51, was always destined to inherit the throne. He is followed in the line of succession by his daughter, 20-year-old Princess Ingrid Alexandra.
