The new CNN original series “TV On the Edge” explores television history

CNN wants to delve deep into television history with its latest original series.

The cable news channel has a four-part series called Television at the limitwith each episode highlighting a pivotal television moment that shaped pop culture, showcasing “the power of television, the legacy of these iconic events and their impact on our lives.”

The series premieres on Sunday, September 22nd at 9 p.m. The next episodes will also be broadcast during this time.

Moments featured in the show include Vice President Dan Quayle’s attack on the sitcom Murphy Brown for its portrayal of single mothers. The series will feature interviews with star Candace Bergen, as well as showrunner Diane English, writer Korby Siamis and director Barnet Kellman. Other episodes will feature journalists, comedians, politicians and cultural critics speaking about the moments.

These moments included: Ellen DeGeneres’ coming out episode, which was watched by over 40 million viewers; Oprah Winfrey’s 1988 weight loss revelation on her daytime talk show; and Kanye West’s off-the-cuff remarks about President George W. Bush during a live Hurricane Katrina benefit special in 2005.

“We are building on our success with CNN Original Series that explore pop culture and television history, Television at the limit is a fresh take on the genre and captures the nostalgia of these iconic moments that resonate long after they first air,” said Amy Entelis, executive VP of talent, CNN Originals and creative development at CNN Worldwide, in a statement.

CNN has expanded its offering of original series after scaling back under former CEO Chris Licht. CNN CEO Mark Thompson is counting on original series to serve as a differentiating factor on evenings without a heavy news load.

Earlier this month, CNN also launched a new free streaming channel based on its CNN Originals program.

Television at the limit is executive produced by Eric Johnson. Entelis and Katie Hinman are executive producers for CNN Studios.
