CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Shuttle bus replacements will continue today (Thursday, Oct. 3) on the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s Green Line north of North Station after a Green Line train derailed near Lechmere Station in Cambridge on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, the MBTA said it was “unclear” when service would resume as the investigation into the derailment was ongoing. “Once the investigation is complete and the area is returned to the T,” the agency wrote in a news release, “infrastructure and maintenance personnel will make any necessary repairs to restore operations.”

The National Transportation Safety Board has opened the investigation, and NTSB lawsuits may lead to prolonged disruptions at accident scenes. In the case of a November 16, 2023 collision between a Chicago Transit Authority train and snow removal equipment, it took November 20 for NTSB to turn over the scene of the accident to the CTA to begin cleanup and repair work. Subsequent CTA activity after the collision meant that it took 50 days to reopen the 4.7-mile Yellow Line to Skokie, Illinois (see “CTA to resume Yellow Line operations…”) Trains News Wire, January 4, 2024).

WBZ-TV reports that the derailed train was removed from the scene early this morning.

Seven people were taken to hospitals for treatment after a train with about 50 people on board derailed on Tuesday (see “Seven Taken to Hospital…” News Wire, October 1, 2024).

– Updated at 8 a.m. CT with report of train’s distance from accident scene.
