The loss of the Twins drops the Tigers’ magic number to one

The Rays weren’t the only victims the Tigers took on Thursday.

After Detroit defeated Tampa Bay 4-3 at Comerica Park and the Royals defeated the Nationals 7-4, the idle Mariners were officially eliminated from American League wild-card contention.

Later Thursday, the Twins lost to the Marlins 8-6 in 13 innings, reducing the Tigers’ magic number to clinch a playoff spot to one.

The Tigers could clinch a playoff spot on Friday when they open a three-game series against the White Sox to close out the regular season.

According to FanGraphs, the Tigers’ chances of making the playoffs are 99.2 percent.

MLB STAND

AL wildcard standings

The top two division winners receive a bye to the Division Series. The other four teams play best-of-three series in the wildcard round.

The top four teams have all secured playoff spots: the Yankees (93-66), Orioles (88-71), Guardians (92-67) and Astros (86-73). The Yankees, Guardians and Astros are the division winners and the Yankees and Guardians will be the top two seeds. The Astros will face the following three teams in the wild card round:

1. Orioles (88-71, wild card won)

2. Royals (85-74)

3. Tigers (85-74)

4. Twins (82-77), 3 games back

The games on Thursday

Marlins 8, (at) Twins 6 (13 innings): Otto Lopez doubled the go-ahead run in the 13th as the Marlins defeated the reeling Twins. Carlos Correa hit a home run for the Twins, who were 2 for 19 with runners in scoring position and lost 15 points on the night. The Twins have lost six of their last eight games and are now three games behind the Tigers and Royals in the race for the final two AL wild card spots. They would be eliminated with another loss or win against Detroit or Kansas City.

Royals 7, (at) Nationals 4: Pinch hitter Adam Frazier’s one-out line-drive base hit to left field in the bottom of the ninth drove in two runs to break a 4-4 tie and lift the Royals to their third straight win after a seven-game losing streak. Salvador Perez’s second single of the game scored Frazier and chased Nationals closer Kyle Finnegan (3-8). Hunter Renfroe led off with his 14th home run of the season, a 424-foot shot that left the park at 108.4 mph. Kris Bubic (1-1) earned the win with a scoreless eighth inning. Lucas Erceg, the Royals’ closer, earned his third straight save in the series – and 14th this season – with a shutdown in the ninth inning.
