A familiar matchup will take place at the Meadowlands on Sunday when the Jets host the Denver Broncos, as it will be the third time in the last three years that the Jets have been at wide receiver Garrett Wilson is covered by Denver’s top cornerback, Patrick Surtain II.

“He’s a good player, he’s got great feet,” Wilson, the 10th overall pick in 2022, said of Surtain, the 11th overall pick in 2021.

“He’s a technician, you can tell he grew up with a sticking point early on,” he said, referring to Surtain’s defensive back father, who was a three-time Pro Bowler during his 11-year NFL career. “It’s not for nothing that he’s one of the best in the league.”

When Denver hosted New York in Week 5 last season, Wilson was targeted six times with Surtain in coverage and hauled in receptions for 22 yards.

But for this Week 4 game, the situation has changed. Trade Mile High for MetLife, yes, but again under the veteran quarterback center Aaron Rodgerswho, in Surtain’s words, has developed a “dynamic connection” with Gang Green’s “great receiver.”

“I’m looking forward to it,” Surtain said of the match. “Aaron Rodgers is a guy I’ve always played against.” I grew up watching him make incredible shots every year. Obviously he’s a future Hall of Famer, so I’m looking forward to that matchup.”

He added: “We need to come up with a game plan for them and we look forward to competing and being the best defense we can be to prevent that from happening.”

Rodgers called the cornerback – 16 years his junior – earlier this week “one of the best players in the league at any position” and added that the Broncos’ defense will be “a good test for us.”

And testing is for Wilson, who has taken an opponent’s best cornerback all year long – including last week against New England’s Christian González – is ready again.

“I love it, man. I love it,” he said of the challenge of competing against the best. “As long as we don’t crown them before the game and still take a few chances on them, I love it.”

Surtain has already reported on Seattle this year DK MetcalfPittsburgh George Pickensand Tampa Bay’s Mike Evans and held that trio to a total of 53 yards on target. However, the cornerback has already been sentenced to six penalties this year.

Wilson — 150 yards and a touchdown on 15 catches so far — hopes to build on that and a Jets offense that has scored 24 points in each of its last two games.

“We ran the ball well, got the defense going and made plays in the receiver room, just being opportunistic with it. I feel like we’re improving here,” Wilson said. “So we know that when it matters we have to perform and I feel like we were at our best then.

“We had all our options and we just took advantage of them.”

Of course, with NFL teams seemingly playing more two-high safeties this season, there’s a chance that Surtain isn’t on an island and has over-the-top support for much of the game.

“Anytime they look like that, it can be frustrating,” Wilson said, adding that it creates opportunities for the other side of the field and other receivers. “It’s definitely frustrating, I pride myself on making plays… and doing what I do. But if they want to make me look like that, we have to deal with it as best we can.”
