The jersey that New York Yankees icon Babe Ruth wore while commenting on his legendary throw at the World Series broke all previous memorabilia sales records this week.

There is no bigger name in sports history than Yankees legend Babe Ruth. He revolutionized baseball during an unparalleled career that saw him set new records in many statistical categories. But “The Great Bambino” also delivered certain groundbreaking moments that will be remembered forever.

The most notable event occurred during Game 3 of the 1932 World Series. While at bat, Ruth surprisingly pointed his bat toward the stands to signal that he would hit the next pitch deep. Like a true titan of the sport, he announced his at-bat and hit a home run to center field against Chicago Cubs pitcher Charlie Root.

The jersey he wore that day was recently auctioned off, and many speculated that it would break the record for sports memorabilia sales. And that’s exactly what happened on Saturday, and in a big way. Babe Ruth’s worn 1932 World Series jersey sold for an absurd $24.12 million. That was a huge jump in price after the jersey sold for just $940,000 in 2005.

The shocking total – which will likely never be broken – is double the previous record for sports memorabilia at auction, which was set by a rare 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle card that sold for $12.6 million just two years ago.

In terms of used jersey sales, Ruth’s Game 3 jersey was priced $14 million higher than a Michael Jordan jersey, which fetched just over $10 million in 2022. “His Airness” wore this memorabilia in Game 1 of the Chicago Bulls’ 1998 NBA Finals series, which they eventually won against the Utah Jazz.
