The insanely dark horror film “Hidden Gem” is now streaming on Hulu

Viewers are praising this incredibly dark horror film, which is a “hidden gem” and is now available to stream on Hulu.

While mainstream horror films like “Longlegs” dominate the box office, streaming services allow lesser-known horror projects to make their big appearance.

And one project that is considered a “secret gem” in the horror community is the 2018 Swedish-Danish film Aniara.

Although the film only has a rating of 63% on Rotten Tomatoes, Aniara is considered An absolute must-see for the horror community due to its incredibly depressing plot.

Aniara follows a group of humans trying to get to Mars after Earth is devastated by pollution, natural disasters, and rising sea levels.

While traveling around the planet, the ship deviates from its course to avoid a collision with space debris.

Unfortunately, some of the debris hits the ship, causing the Aniara to lose control of its navigation and propulsion systems and become unable to reach Mars.

The situation quickly descends into chaos as the leaders on board the ship try to keep everyone in line with lies and propaganda. At the same time, the workers understand the dire situation everyone is in.

Without giving away the film as a whole, Aniara offers an incredibly realistic and unsparing look at how a mission like this could end for the people on board and how easily people can cling to the lies that make their lives more comfortable.

The Hulu film was highlighted in an August 2024 Reddit post in which a user asked, “What is YOUR truly hidden horror gem?”

Many other horror enthusiasts were quick to recommend Aniara in the comment thread.

“It’s not a ‘real’ horror film, but no film has filled me with more existential dread and emptiness than Aniara. It contains things I’ve never seen explored or addressed in any sci-fi or horror film before. That final time card and the editing, JESUS,” wrote one viewer.

And another commented: “Just watched Aniara. Oh my goodness, I’m obsessed! Fun fact: apparently this movie is based on an epic poem by Harry Martinson. ‘Aniara’ also roughly translates to ‘the ship of sorrows’ in ancient Greek.”
