The hurricane season is heating up as the likelihood of a tropical system developing and moving into the Gulf of Mexico increases

FOX 13 meteorologists are monitoring an area in the Western Caribbean that could develop into a storm system over the next seven days.

The storm is expected to reach the Gulf of Mexico sometime next week, but it is unclear where it will go next or how strong it will be.

According to the National Hurricane Center, there is a 40% chance that the system will develop within the next seven days.

When will the system evolve?

FOX 13 meteorologist Jim Weber says the development will be slow and likely won’t happen until late next week or next weekend.

The organized low-pressure area can form within a larger vortex, an extended low-pressure area that can contribute to the swirling of other low-pressure areas.

Currently, there is great instability, humidity and heat in this area, which means that all the conditions are in place for one of these systems to operate.

Where will the storm go?

Weber says a weaker system will probably move westward, a stronger one will probably move eastward.

This is not the only system that meteorologists are monitoring.

Gordon’s remains are still floating in the Atlantic Ocean, and although there is a chance of regeneration, the likelihood is decreasing.

Just west of the remains of Gordon is another system that has a small chance of development but is expected to remain over open water.

Meteorologists say that whether there is a storm or not, it is important to have a hurricane plan for the family, as September is usually the most active month of the hurricane season.
