The Hundred 2024: Mooney hits 99 as Originals beat Superchargers

Beth Mooney scored an unbeaten 99 points as the Manchester Originals defeated the Northern Superchargers by 17 points in the women’s hundred competition at Old Trafford.

The Australian opener posted a score of 151-3, the second highest in the history of the competition, a target the Superchargers could not reach, finishing 134-8.

The Originals suffered the disappointment of being knocked out of the competition following Invincibles-Spirit’s result earlier in the day, but they will have been pleased to keep their local rivals off the top of the table.

The home team won the toss and their decision to bat proved to be a good one as Mooney and Laura Wolvaardt scored 60 for the first wicket.

Linsey Smith had forced Woolvardt into stumping, but Mooney followed on and scored 51 of the 67 runs together with Kathryn Bryce.

The Originals dismissed Bryce (13 off 21) with ten balls to go and replaced her with Sophie Ecclestone. However, the English spinner was run out on the last ball of the innings while attempting to score the second run that would have helped Mooney to her century.

The Superchargers lost openers Davina Perrin and Hollie Armitage for single figures in their return match, but Australian pair Phoebe Litchfield and Annabel Sutherland scored 41 for the third wicket.

Kim Garth bowled against Litchfield and Eve Jones caught Sutherland bowling against Bryce, leaving the Superchargers 102-4.

Georgia Wareham kept the Superchargers in the game by hitting three four-pointers to Danielle Gregory.

But Bryce returned for the final set and joined Mooney in completing a hat-trick. Alice Davidson-Richards was caught and Kate Cross was stumped before he dismissed Wareham two balls later as the Superchargers fell well short of their total.
