The historic women’s group Tampa Bay Newcomers supports people in need

NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. – The Tampa Bay Newcomers is a historic women’s club dating back to the 1950s that offers more than just lunch.

They raise.

“Our motto is: Bloom where you were planted,” said Newcomers President Cindy Sommers.

And you can be sure that they live by this motto.

Made up of women new to the city and women who have called it home for years, the club has been giving back to the Tampa Bay Area for nearly 75 years.

And they are always looking for new members – and new do-gooders. (Sorry, men are not allowed!)

One of their more recent community partnerships is also one of their most poignant.

Once a month, the newcomers deliver supplies, from hygiene to therapy items, to Pasco Kids First, a counseling center for the prevention and intervention of child abuse.

The newcomers pay for the materials out of their own pockets.

“The Tampa Bay Newcomers were incredible,” said PKF’s Maria Hixon, who said a big part of her nonprofit’s work also involves helping healthy families in need.

After visiting Pasco Kids First – and seeing the wall of T-shirts made by the program’s children – newcomer Erika Karaoulanis said, “We just left different than we went in.”
