The highest ever possible high temperature of 115°+ as the unprecedented heatwave continues!

PHOENIX – High pressure is causing temperatures to skyrocket, bringing unprecedented heat to Arizona for this time of year.

A Excessive heat warning applies to the Phoenix metropolitan area and much of the low-lying deserts throughout Arizona until 8 p.m. Tuesday.

So, we’re there ABC15 weather action mode Until then, a reminder to take action in these dangerously hot temperatures. Stay hydrated, limit time outside in the afternoon, and never leave children or pets in the car, no matter how quickly the errand needs to be run.

This heat wave is absolutely breaking all records as temperatures in the valley rise to 110 to 116 degrees over the next few days. The average highs considered “normal” for this time of year are in the mid-90s.

Previously, the last 110-degree day ever recorded in Phoenix was September 19, 2010, but we’ve been breaking that record day after day this week.

It’s likely that we will continue to experience the last 110 degree day ever through at least October 1st. Currently, the hottest temperature ever recorded in Phoenix in October is 107 degrees.

There’s even a chance we could reach 116 degrees on Saturday. If we can do that, it will beat the record for the last day of over 115 degrees Celsius by three weeks! On average, Phoenix only experiences temperatures of 115° or higher two days a year, but as our climate continues to get hotter in recent years, we have seen this increase significantly.

Last year we set a record of 22 days with 115° or more, and so far this year there have been 11, making 2024 the third most record high temperature, behind 2023 and 2020.

Luckily, our nights are getting longer, so we don’t have to expect lows of 90 degrees. Nighttime temperatures will drop to the low to mid 80s across the valley, but even that is exceptionally warm for this time of year and we could also set new daily record low temperatures.

Temperatures will gradually fall next week, but triple digits are still forecast through the week of October 7th.

Our drought has worsened in recent months due to the hotter and drier monsoon we have been experiencing. There are only a few days left to get buckets of rain before the monsoon season officially ends on September 30th, and our chance of rain is slim to none across Arizona.

So far this monsoon season, Phoenix has only received 0.74 inches of rain. Our 30-year average (which is considered our normal rainfall amount) is 2.43 inches. However, it is important to remember that this represents a decrease from the previous 30-year average of 2.71 inches (from 1981 to 2010) as the climate in our valley continues to become hotter and drier.
