Warner Bros. has released the first trailer for the Minecraft movie, starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa, and the one-minute spot for the adaptation of one of the most popular games of all time is… absolutely terrifying in almost every way imaginable.

The first and most striking is Jason Momoa’s haircut, which … speaks for itself. But the second most striking is the extreme Greenscreen CGI, what I mean is, of course, if you throw live action people into a Minecraft world, you’re going to need that, but the question is why did you put live action figures in a Minecraft world?

I definitely assumed a Minecraft movie would be in a similar medium to the game. Instead, it’s all just weird-looking, non-game-related CGI cubes, and it’s not just actors voicing Minecraft-shaped characters, it’s just… people. Jack Black shows up looking like he just filmed one of his TikTok videos, with no shave or haircut, and just looking like… Jack Black. But he’s Steve. You know, Steve. At least Jason Momoa agreed to look like an idiot in that wig.

I fully realize I’m not the target audience for this, and it doesn’t have to be a good movie to make a billion dollars at the box office, which I fully expect. But I think there are ways to do popular children’s games right with live-action movies, like Five Nights at Freddy’s, or ways to do certain styles right, like the LEGO movies that were made in… LEGO. They should have made a Minecraft movie in Minecraft, or at least something that looks a lot more like Minecraft than this.

The aesthetics here are simple terrible. The quasi-adaptation of animals and enemies, the live-action actors putting a stamp on the flat backgrounds. Just awful stuff. I can only hope that when this movie comes out in April 2025, it looks more polished, because this trailer makes the Borderlands movie look good. But like I said, no matter what happens, it’s going to make an absolutely insane amount of money, so I guess that doesn’t really matter.

It’s just a shame because there are so many great gaming movies from Sonic to Mario that appeal to a young audience, but if this movie is as bad as it looks, it’s going to break off that series like a clunky branch.
