Calling all BookTok fans: The film adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s bestselling novel “It Ends With Us” is officially in theaters.
The book that went viral on TikTok in 2022 has made it to the big screen when “It Ends With Us” officially premiered on August 9.
The film stars Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni as lovers living in Boston. Although the location is an important aspect of the story, it turns out that the film was not shot in Beantown.
It Ends With Us was actually filmed in a few other cities on the East Coast last year. Here’s where the movie was filmed.
Where was “It Ends With Us” filmed?
The adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s novel It Ends With Us is the latest film to be set in Boston, although the movie was actually shot in the New York area.
The film was shot in 2023 on locations in the New York metropolitan area, including Jersey City and Hoboken, New Jersey.
Justin Baldoni, who in addition to his leading role also directs the film, told Time Out magazine that he did not want to use any sets for the film.
“When I watch a movie, I usually notice when something or somewhere is contrived, and it takes me out of the story,” Baldoni said. “For ‘It Ends With Us,’ there are no sets built on a soundstage and no blue screen anywhere.”
Although the film was not shot in Boston, it includes shots of some of the city’s skylines, such as the Zakim and Longfellow Bridges.
What is “It Ends With Us” about?
It Ends With Us is a romance novel about a woman named Lily Bloom who escapes an abusive childhood to move to Boston and open a flower shop.
There she meets neurosurgeon Ryle Kincaid and the two begin a relationship. The book and film follow Bloom and Kincaid’s turbulent relationship and the problems of domestic violence.
The novel was originally published in 2016 but gained popularity during the pandemic when it went viral on TikTok.
“It Ends With Us” with local actress Jenny Slate
Although the Boston-set movie wasn’t filmed in the city, one of the stars of “It Ends With Us” is bringing her connection to her hometown to the big screen.
Jenny Slate, who plays Bloom’s best friend Allysa Kincaid, is originally from Milton and currently lives in Dartmouth.
Slate’s husband, Ben Shattuck, owns Davoll’s General Store in Dartmouth, one of the oldest general stores in the United States.
