The film “Borderlands” will be available as a streaming version in 11 days

While it’s common for many Hollywood films to be quickly released on streaming services within a month or two, Borderlands is pulling off a record-breaking speedrun.

The huge box office flop will hit digital platforms on August 30, 11 days and just three weeks after its theatrical release on August 9.

That doesn’t mean the film will stream for free on any particular service, but it does mean it will be available for digital purchase and rental on August 30th from providers like Amazon Prime Video or Apple TV. Later, it will be available on an actual service, but it’s not there yet. Lionsgate films stream in a lot of places, so I’m not sure where that will be.

Borderlands remains one of the worst-reviewed major films of the year, with a 10% critic rating, and also ranks in the bottom 10 of all video game adaptations in history. This has not been offset by massive fan support from gamers, and in two weekends the film has grossed just $18 million worldwide, against a budget of over $120 million, with marketing costs on top of that. By the looks of things, it will likely lose $100 million or more.

The digital release is designed to remove one hurdle that keeps you from paying for the movie: actually going to the theater. However, when these new movies come out, the rental price is often $20 at first. Later, the price can drop to $6-$7. However, when most people say they will “wait until the movie is streaming,” they mean “wait until it’s streaming and I don’t have to pay for it.”

We’ve heard little from Gearbox about the film since its release, but it’s pretty clear that it’s scuttled ambitions for live-action franchise expansions. Borderlands 4 remains an unannounced, massive project that Gearbox and 2K are working on, but considering how involved Gearbox’s leadership was in that film, it raises some questions about what they might consider a good fourth game at this point.

There’s no denying how this went. It’s a major failure and a box office flop in a time when we’re actually getting a whole bunch of great video game adaptations in film, TV, and animation. Borderlands tried to tone itself down to appeal to a general audience that didn’t care about the game, while rewriting its story so much that gaming fans didn’t like it either. And this is the result. See for yourself on August 30th if you missed it in theaters like most did.
