Playoff Matches

The Tigers will play their best-of-three wild card series on the road on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. If they get to No. 5, they’ll be in Baltimore. If they drop to No. 6, they will be in Houston.

If the Tigers and Royals end up with the same record, the Royals will receive the No. 5 seed because they hold the tiebreaker over the Tigers.

The Yankees and Guardians receive first-round byes.

Games on Friday

(At) Braves 3, Royals 0: Max Fried threw three hits over 8.2 innings to lead the Braves, but the Royals still had a chance to clinch their first postseason berth since 2015. Kansas City secured a wild card into the American League when Minnesota lost to Baltimore 7-2. A belated celebration was held in the visitors’ clubhouse at Truist Park. Sean Murphy hit a two-run home run and Marcell Ozuna trotted home on a throwing error after stealing a base for the Braves for the first time since 2022. A year ago, the Royals set a franchise record with 106 losses. Now we’re headed to the postseason for the first time since winning the 2015 World Series.

Orioles 7, (at) Twins 2: Cade Povich pitched shutout ball in the sixth, Ryan O’Hearn and Colton Cowser hit home runs, and the Orioles eliminated the Twins from postseason contention. The Orioles clinched the first AL wild-card spot and will host either Detroit or Kansas City in the opening round next week. “Getting to home field with the wild card is huge,” Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said. “We will be thrilled to play in front of our fans. There will be a lot of energy and excitement in the ballpark.” By the fifth inning, the Twins knew the Tigers had won and the Royals had lost, meaning a win would keep their playoff hopes alive. However, they managed just two hits in the first eight innings and trailed 7-0.

For the Twins, it was a bitter end to a once promising season. On August 17, the Twins were 70-53 and had a five-game lead in the wild card standings. Since then they have been 12-25 years old.
