Marvel Studios has unveiled the first costumes for the titular team of The Fantastic Four: First Stepsand they break a 30-year-old rule from previous live-action adaptations of the upcoming MCU team-up. The Fantastic Four: First Steps is one of Marvel’s most anticipated projects, as audiences have been waiting for decades to see a faithful version of Marvel’s First Family in live-action. The first updates on First steps suggest that justice will finally be served for the team, and the design of the Fantastic Four’s MCU costumes supports this idea.

The Fantastic Four’s entry into the MCU was confirmed shortly after Disney acquired 20th Century Fox in 2019, but it was not until Valentine’s Day of this year that the cast of The Fantastic Four: First Steps has been confirmed. Since then Marvel Studios’ presentations at SDCC and D23, as well as leaked set photos, have revealed more information about the exciting Fantastic Four reboot, set to release in July 2025.This included a first look at the team’s new MCU costumes, which are very different from previous live-action interpretations.

Marvel Studios has only revealed Johnny Storm’s costume so far, the others are not yet visible

A short video of the cast of The Fantastic Four: First Steps The episode, shown on D23, featured Joseph Quinn’s Johnny Storm in a blue and white costume with the Fantastic Four logo proudly displayed on his chest. This was the first time viewers saw the team’s official MCU superhero suits, which bear a resemblance to the blue and white costumes first introduced to Marvel Comics by John Byrne in the 1980s. This represents a departure from previous versions of the Fantastic Four costumes, which were primarily blue and blackmore similar to the team’s original suits from the Marvel comics.

The new MCU costumes of the Fantastic Four make me very excited for the upcoming reboot

The Fantastic Four’s official MCU costumes have finally been revealed, and their inspiration from Marvel Comics only increases my anticipation for the film.

The first official live-action adaptation of Marvel’s First Family was released in 2005, with Fantastic Four and its sequel from 2007, Rise of the Silver Surferwhich features Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Chris Evans and Michael Chiklis in blue and black superhero costumes. While the 2015 film Fantastic Four Reboot has completely mutilated the team’s classic suits, John Krasinski’s costume in 2022 Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Chris Evans’ new suit in 2024 Deadpool and Wolverine also used blue and black designs. The blue and white suits of the Fantastic Four already existed once, three decades ago.

The blue and white costumes of the Fantastic Four were previously only seen in the unreleased film “The Fantastic Four” from 1994.

“The Fantastic Four” from 1994 was the first live-action film of the team

In the 1980s, the German producer Bernd Eichinger’s company Constantin Film acquired the film rights to the Fantastic Four and, in order to retain the option, began producing a low-budget film about the team in the early 1990s. Under the supervision of B-movie specialist Roger Corman and music video director Oley Sassone, the film was made in 1994. The Fantastic Four was developed with a budget of just one million dollars, but was ultimately only exhibited once. Although it was not published, The Fantastic Four saw the titular team in blue and white superhero suits fighting against Doctor Doom.

starring Alex Hyde-White as Reed Richards’ Mister Fantastic, Rebecca Staab as Sue Storm’s Invisible Woman, Jay Underwood as Johnny Storm’s Human Torch, Michael Bailey Smith as Ben Grimm, Carl Ciarfalio as the Thing, and Joseph Culp as Doctor Doom.

Interestingly, the low-budget suits from the 1994 film The Fantastic Four were much more comedic than the costume that Joseph Quinn wore as Johnny Storm in the recordings of The Fantastic Four: First StepsHowever, both designs were inspired by the same era of Marvel Comics, as the team wore blue and white costumes between 1981 and 1996. Fantastic Four #416The fact that Marvel Studios has brought back the blue and white costumes instead of sticking with the usual black accentsspeaks volumes about the new direction of the Fantastic Four.

Why blue and white costumes are the best choice for the MCU’s Fantastic Four

Blue and white costumes distinguish the MCU’s Fantastic Four from previous incarnations

Marvel Studios’ revival of the blue and white costumes of the Fantastic Four in First steps is clearly an attempt to differentiate this newly revamped version of the team from previous incarnations. These versions of the suits were never officially seen in live action, except in the unreleased 1994 The Fantastic FourSo Showcasing them as the team’s first costumes in the MCU is a bold move that proves that this version of Marvel’s First Family will be unlike anything that has come before. The dark days of the Fantastic Four are over under the supervision of 20th Century Fox.

“Fantastic Four: First Steps” takes the team in a more lighthearted direction than previous versions.

The new blue and white costumes suggest that The Fantastic Four: First Steps will take the team in a more lighthearted direction than previous versions. The Fantastic Four were meant to be a lighthearted and entertaining team for the screen, but some previous lineups, particularly the 2015 version consisting of Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Bell, were far too dark. Marvel Studios’ Fantastic Four new costumes reflect the optimism and hope of the reboot’s 1960s settingso it will be great to finally see them in action next year.
