The Dallas Cowboys’ run defense has a tough task with Derrick Henry and Lamar Jackson

The stench of embarrassment still lingers in the air after the Dallas Cowboys’ 44-19 loss to the New Orleans Saints last week in Week 2. Home-field advantage could not stop the Saints’ attack, as they completely overwhelmed Dallas’ run defense, averaging 4.9 yards per carry and totaling 190 rushing yards last Sunday.

Alvin Kamara, in particular, had a great outing against the Cowboys last week. He rushed for 115 yards and three touchdowns on just 20 carries and also added 65 yards and a touchdown through the air. The way he dominated the Cowboys on the ground is likely something Baltimore Ravens RB Derrick Henry will want to emulate in Week 3.

Henry is still one of the better running backs in the entire league right now. He may not have had the best start of his career after joining the Baltimore Ravens as a free agent in the offseason, but make no mistake: He’s a dangerous runner and is probably excited to play against Dallas’ questionable run defense.

As things currently stand, the Dallas Cowboys rank 30th in overall running efficiency while allowing the fourth-most yards after contact in the entire league. And that’s after facing two teams that don’t have the QB/RB duo that the Baltimore Ravens have in Lamar Jackson and Henry. Those two pose a tremendous challenge for the Cowboys.

At 6’2″ and 240 pounds, Henry is a formidable opponent for any team in the league. Strong, physical and surprisingly quick for a running back his size, he has proven throughout his career that he is difficult to beat when he has the ball in his hands. Mike Zimmer will need his players at their best to prevent him from getting out of control.

That means staying technically sound, making tackles, and maintaining gap integrity on every single down from the start until the final seconds expire. That may be easier said than done after they did the exact opposite last week against the New Orleans Saints rushing attack. But it’s probably the only chance they have to pull out a win.

Unfortunately, Henry isn’t the only monster that could give Dallas nightmares this week. QB Jackson presents a whole different problem for them due to his unique ability to be both a runner and a passer. He is as dangerous as anyone in the league and combined with Henry, they are sure to give the Cowboys problems in Week 3.

It will be really interesting to see what game plan Mike Zimmer comes up with to prevent these two from embarrassing his defense two weeks in a row. If these two go crazy like the Saints did last week, Dallas probably won’t have much of a chance to win. But if they can be kept in check, the Cowboys will most likely come away with another victory.
