    The Cowboys called up the former Auburn pass rusher for Thursday night’s game

    Defensive end Carl Lawson has been selected by the Dallas Cowboys for Thursday night’s game, the NFL team announced.

    The Cowboys play the New York Giants on Thursday at 7:15 p.m. CDT at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Prime Video will televise the game.

    Lawson is a member of the practice squad and is not normally eligible to play in games. But every NFL team can promote two practice squad members to active status for each game, and Dallas did that with the former Auburn star for the second straight year.

    Lawson appeared on the field for eight defensive snaps and one special teams play after being upgraded for Sunday’s game against the Baltimore Ravens, which the Cowboys lost 28-25.

    Lawson signed with Dallas on August 15, five months after becoming an unrestricted free agent. He did not survive the cut from the preseason roster to the regular season roster, but the Cowboys re-signed Lawson to their practice squad.

    After starting every game for the New York Jets in 2022, Lawson became a forgotten player in 2023, playing in just six contests. With the emergence of 2022 first-round draft pick Jermaine Johnson and former St. Paul’s Episcopal star Bryce Huff, Lawson played 101 defensive snaps last season and did not record a sack or a quarterback hit.

    After being traded from Auburn to the Cincinnati Bengals as a fourth-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, Lawson led the NFL’s first-year players with 8.5 sacks and made the Professional Football Writers of America All-Rookie Team. Over the next two seasons, Lawson missed 13 games due to injuries and totaled six sacks.

    In his fourth season, Lawson recorded 5.5 sacks and ranked second in the NFL with 32 quarterback hits. That earned Lawson a three-year, $45 million contract with the Jets as an unrestricted free agent.

    Before playing a game for New York, Lawson suffered a torn Achilles tendon during a joint training camp with the Green Bay Packers and was sidelined for the 2021 NFL season due to the injury.

    In 2022, Lawson returned and recorded seven sacks and 24 quarterback hits.
