The Chicago White Sox are the worst team in modern MLB history

CNN

With their 4-1 loss to the Detroit Tigers, the 2024 White Sox entered the record books as one of the most incompetent teams in sports history.

Friday’s loss was Chicago’s 121st of the season and set the Major League Baseball record for most losses in a single season in baseball’s modern era (since 1901).

The Tigers scored the first two runs of the game in the fifth inning. Chicago outfielder Zach DeLoach then hit his first major league home run in the next half, cutting the lead to one.

However, the Tigers answered in the seventh inning, securing the victory and securing the franchise’s first playoff berth since 2014.

The Los Angeles Angels are now sole owners of the league’s longest active playoff drought.

Chicago’s ineptitude may have brought relief to some in the New York City area.

The Mets previously held the current record when New York lost 120 times in 1962.

The 1899 Cleveland Spiders (remember them?) hold the overall losing record, as the then-National League team finished with an abysmal record of 20-134. The Spiders won just one of the team’s last 41 games.

Cleveland has proven that futility can happen to any franchise. Their historic downfall came after a pitcher named Cy Young led the team to 93 wins seven years earlier.

Signs of a historically bad year began earlier this season when the White Sox opened with just three wins in their first 25 games.

The team later lost 14 consecutive games and then was eliminated 21 games, tying the American League record with the 1998 Baltimore Orioles.

Before the unwanted act, infielder Nicky Lopez, who was a White Sox fan as a child, told MLB.com: “It obviously sucks.

“It will be me, we will all hold on to it. But we will continue and whether I am here next year or somewhere else, it will happen quickly.”

Chicago has only won 39 games so far in 2024.

One positive aspect of the 121-game losing streak is the way the Sox’ social media team has announced the team’s seemingly daily losses.

Last week, after the loss to the San Diego Padres, the team on X sarcastically posted the final score as follows: “FINAL: can be found on the MLB app.”

This was the snarling post on the previous evening’s result: “FINAL: The number of runs we scored was not greater than the number of runs they scored.”

After Friday night’s loss, which marked the infamous new low, the team posted up and more.

Despite the win against the Angels earlier this week, Chicago’s lack of success of the year could get even worse as the team still has two games to play against the Tigers before the season can end.
