The Bulldogs’ late comeback secured the tie with the Tigers

RUSTON, La. – Goals from newcomers in the second half Maeva Costenaro and in the fifth year Kalli Matlock helped Tech to a tie with cross-city rival Grambling State. LA Tech battled back from a 3-1 deficit in the second half to secure a 3-3 tie with Grambling State on Sunday night in front of 252 spectators at Robert Mack Caruthers Field.

In the first half, Grambling State Tech attacked early after Naiya Singleton scored in the 36th minute with assists from Charlotte Cuthbertson and Ronya Halleen after Kennedy Farr scored another goal in the 38th minute. Tech responded with a goal from Matlock in the 40th minute after Grambling State was awarded a handball in the box, allowing Matlock to convert the penalty.

Later in the second half, Grambling State trailed the Bulldogs 3-1 on a goal by Jayla Gage in the 51st minute. Costenaro cut Grambling State’s lead to one goal on a goal from well outside the box in the 57th minute. LA Tech was awarded another penalty after Grambling State again handled in the box, and Matlock converted her second goal of the night to tie the game.

“A big compliment to Kalli, who took the initiative in high-pressure situations. Her first penalty towards the end of the first half kept us in the game and the second penalty equalized the game,” said Voltz.

Tech has now allowed more shots on goal than its opponents in the second half in two straight games. Louisiana Tech held Grambling State to four shots on goal while the Bulldogs allowed 10 shots on goal in the second half.

“As we mature as a program, we have to learn to capitalize on opportunities early. In the second half, we matched their energy and held our own. We have to overcome poor decisions on the field and not let them affect us,” Voltz said.
