The Borderlands movie is coming out digitally just three weeks after its theatrical release, and that can only be a good thing, right?

Borderlands hasn’t even been in theaters for a month yet, and Lionsgate has already confirmed that the film will be released digitally this week.

The Borderlands movie is not what I or anyone else would call good, I think. In fact, I would call it very bad, I did that in my review of the film, and it’s no surprise that the video game adaptation flopped at the box office, opening with $16 million on a $115 million budget, which is, to put it bluntly, abysmal. Apparently, Lionsgate didn’t like that result either, because yesterday the production company announced that the film’s premium video and on-demand release will be later this week, on August 30. As a reminder, the film only came out on August 9, meaning it’s only available digitally three weeks after its release.

You can buy the movie for $25 or rent it for 48 hours, which costs $20. Obviously buying is the better deal, but if you ask me, you shouldn’t settle for either and wait for it to land on a streaming service, where you can say, “Oh, Borderland is on Netflix now,” before immediately scrolling through all the other shows and movies before deciding you’re not in the mood and going back to Twitter. It’s still a better use of your time.

There is some good news for fans of the video games, at least. Last week at Gamescom Opening Night Live, 2K and Gearbox Software finally announced that they are working on Borderlands 4, although they didn’t get to show much of it. It’s a classic “yes, it’s real!” trailer, although Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford had already hinted at its existence, so we all kind of knew it was coming. Still, it’s better than nothing, and for Gearbox’s sake, you better hope the game is good enough to make the few people who have seen the movie forget it.
