The actor and his bride said “I do” in a wedding ceremony at Lake Tahoe: “A dream come true, spiritual, intimate, magical and all around beautiful,” says Atkinson.

Matthew Atkinson and Brytnee Ratledge are husband and wife!

Rich and beautiful The 34-year-old actor spoke exclusively to PEOPLE about his “fairytale” fall wedding to his actress wife after the couple said “I do” in an intimate ceremony in Lake Tahoe last month.

Atkinson described the ceremony with 50 guests, which took place on November 8 at Tahoe Blue Estate, as “a dream come true, spiritual, intimate, magical and all around beautiful.”

“We’d been to Tahoe before, camping along Highway 395. It was the first place we visited after a short search,” he tells PEOPLE. “It seemed like God told both of us it was the right place.”

“We didn’t want to see each other until she walked down the aisle,” Atkinson says of the ceremony. “We touched first and said a prayer for the ceremony, and then we stepped back during the ceremony for our first prayer together while all of our friends and family prayed for us.”

The actor and Ratledge exchanged handwritten vows during the ceremony and “lucked out with a great sunset” on the day of the ceremony after it snowed “beautifully” during the wedding rehearsal. Atkinson posted a clip of it on Instagram last month.

The fall “I do” included a barbecue buffet and s’mores cake. Wedding guests joined the couple for a “three-day party” celebrating their love. “It was important to Brytnee and I that it was a small, intimate gathering to celebrate our beloved union with all of our closest friends and family,” says Atkinson.

“We had dinner at a pub and played cornhole and other games there,” he adds. “Luckily, we were able to stay with some of our closest friends and the whole week was like a vacation trip with friends.”

Atkinson says his first dance with Ratledge as a married couple to Needtobreathe’s “Fall on Me” is one of his favorite memories of the wedding, along with “seeing us as she walked down the aisle and our prayers together.”

Atkinson got engaged to Ratledge on June 5. The couple first met at a local gym, Atkinson tells PEOPLE. “Then, years later, when we were both single, I was sending her direct messages,” he added.

And the rest is… as they say… history!
