The best workplace for women in America? Here in Columbus

play

A Columbus company has been named the best workplace in the country for women.

Nationwide Children’s Hospital topped Forbes magazine’s annual survey of more than 150,000 women employees at companies with at least 1,000 employees, ranked on a scale of 1 to 600.

To win the spot, Nationwide Children’s beat out NASA, Progressive, Lululemon and other children’s hospitals, including Cincinnati Children’s and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in New York.

How was the winner determined?

The list recognizes companies that are helping to increase the proportion of women in leadership positions, reduce the gender pay gap and promote greater equity in the workplace.

Forbes partnered with Statista, a searchable database of statistics, studies, dossiers, infographics and more, to conduct the survey. They asked women how likely they were to recommend their current and previous employers, as well as other employers they are familiar with.

According to Forbes, the women rated their current employers on a number of factors, including work environment, equal pay, parental leave and how allegations of sexual misconduct were handled.

It also looked at how many women are in leadership positions at each company. This research was combined with the survey results to create a score and rank the companies for the America’s Best Employers for Women 2024 list.

Why Nationwide Children’s Hospital?

Nationwide Children’s Hospital, south of downtown Columbus, has a predominantly female staff.

More than 80 percent of the hospital’s 15,000 employees are female, the hospital management told Forbes. Women also make up 65 percent of the hospital’s management and specialist positions.

This is not the norm in any workplace worldwide.

According to the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Report 2024, women make up about 31% of top managers and 42% of the total workforce worldwide.

“Nationwide Children’s is honored by Forbes’ recognition,” said Lorina Wise, the hospital’s chief human resources officer.

“We are proud to be a nonprofit organization driven by equity and inclusion,” said Wise. “We remain committed to fostering a diverse, inclusive and collaborative work environment where our entire team can do their best work to achieve the best outcomes for all children worldwide.”

According to Forbes, Nationwide Children’s employees rated the company highly for its career opportunities, working conditions and the number of women in senior leadership positions. It was also praised for its good benefits, including on-site child care.

“Nationwide Children’s goes above and beyond to promote the development of women both in and outside of the workplace,” said the Forbes ranking.
