Barbie turns 65 this year and is making headlines with yet another new project. This time, doll maker Mattel has teamed up with HMD – the maker of Nokia phones. The result is a Barbie-pink flip phone that will appeal to parents – and anyone looking for a digital detox.
Like other Nokia phones, the HMD Barbie Phone is a “dumbphone” – it has no internet connection or apps, so you can’t keep up with social media or spend the afternoon doomscrolling.
The dual-screen phone lets you make calls and of course send text messages – and there’s a camera, but the resolution is limited to just 300,000 pixels (or a third of a megapixel) so you can “enjoy” the features of the first Y2K camera phones.
The phone only works on old 2G phone networks, however, which limits its appeal to those who want to use the phone abroad. This early digital network is still available in the UK and other parts of Europe – but was eventually switched off in the US. We’re told that an American version of the Nokia phone will be announced soon, so it’s likely that it will offer 4G compatibility.
The phone is more than just a pink flip phone. The Barbie theme is continued with a specially designed user interface and some nods to the Barbie cult. A “Hi Barbie” voice greets you when you turn the phone on, it says, and you’ll see a missed call notification from Ken. The phone comes with a Barbie-themed beaded bracelet, as well as interchangeable back covers and a set of stickers.
The HMD Barbie Phone is now available direct from HMD for £99.99.
