Young people hate phone calls. According to a recent survey, 23% of people under 35 NEVER answer the phone, so if you’re going to call them, you better have a good reason.
2,000 people were asked to name the most acceptable reasons for calling someone instead of texting in 2024. Here they are…
1. For a general chat. So you just want to chat and you know the person doesn’t work. But if the person is under 35, you might still want to text first.
2. To inform someone of a DEATH. Still the kind of message most of us don’t want to receive via text message.
3. Show support when someone is going through a difficult time.
4. To wish them a happy birthday. (And that’s why my birthday is the WORST day of the year.)
5. When you’re running late. For example, when you’re driving and can’t text, or you want to make sure your text isn’t missed.
6. To book things, such as a hotel or restaurant reservation.
7. To announce positive news. For example: “We’re pregnant!”
8. Call in sick from work.
9. When you are lost or looking for someone. For example, when you are traveling somewhere and want to meet someone.
10. To share a negative health update.
The survey found that the average adult will spend only five and a half minutes a day on the phone by 2024. However, among young people, this figure is closer to zero.
