The 10 best action movies of 2024, ranked

Any overview of the best films of a year before the year in question is over is naturally a little premature, but this is where the two wonderful words “so far” come in. Consider a discussion like this a “work in progress”. The intention here is to means that a good number of action films have been released so far in 2024 (and hopefully more will follow before 2025 begins).

Below are some of them, although the term “action film” is used quite broadly here. Some of them are more action-packed than others, and some are more easily defined as science fiction films, but action plays a role in all of them, and they all deliver, to some degree, what anyone looking for intense, sometimes fantastical, occasionally over-the-top, and always exciting action sequences needs.

10 “Bad Boys: Ride or Die”

Directors: Adil El Arbi, Bilall Fallah

The Bad Boys The series is surprisingly extensive, at least considering how long it has been known as a series name. The first film was released almost 30 years before the last, 2024’s Bad Boys: Ride or Diethat again Will Smith And Martin Lawrence Screaming, teasing, swearing, and death-defying, and it goes on and on for about 120 minutes, until the movie simply ends.

But maybe that’s enough, and if you want a reliable buddy comedy paired with solid action, you’ll get it with Bad Boys: Ride or Die. Earlier films in the series may have been better or at least fresher, but anyone who is specifically interested in this film series will probably find that the fourth film ticks the necessary boxes.

9 “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire”

Director: Adam Wingard

Not everyone Godzilla Film can definitely be defined as an action film, but the series has some pretty explosive and action-packed entries, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire The title characters don’t clash as much here as they did in 2021. Godzilla vs. Kongand end up in a kind of uneasy alliance to take on a newly emerged Kaiju, the Skar King, who has the power to conquer the world.

The plot is extremely simple and the film actually works when it avoids trite dialogue and forgettable human characters (which are particularly unimportant in this film about giant monsters). For those who want very stupid action, and quite a lot of it, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire proves to be satisfactory in phaseseven if it is ultimately rather shallow entertainment.

8 “Planet of the Apes: Kingdom”

Director: Wes Ball

2024 was a good year for those who like action-oriented monkey movies, with Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire Added to this is the slightly more noble Planet of the Apes: Kingdomthe latter is also part of an extensive sci-fi franchise that stretches back decades. It should be noted that Planet of the Apes: Kingdom doesn’t have that much action, but overall you can probably still call it an action/adventure/sci-fi film.

It takes place many years after the last Planet of the Apes Movie, 2017 Planet of the Apes: Survivaland follows a new group of characters living in a world permanently changed by the events of the last three films. If anything, Planet of the Apes: Kingdom A little more action and/or a slightly faster pace probably wouldn’t have hurt it (at nearly 2.5 hours, it feels long), but technically it’s impressive and ultimately more than serviceable as far as blockbuster entertainment goes.

7 “Deadpool and Wolverine”

Director: Shawn Levy

Dead Pool And Deadpool 2 were not box office duds, but even they did not generate quite the level of hype and excitement that Deadpool and Wolverine done, to the extent that this film looks like it could be a contender for the title of highest-grossing film of 2024. Moreover, it is easy to summarize what it is about: the characters Deadpool and Wolverine finally get to meet each other.

It is also the film that officially introduces both of them into the MCU, and although it was by no means a perfect film, Deadpool and Wolverine also served as a kind of impetus for the long-running film universe. Ryan Reynolds And Hugh Jackman do their job reliably, There is a lot of irreverent/confident humor, and most of the blood-soaked action sequences satisfy. It’s a crowd pleaser through and through…not that there’s anything wrong with that.

6 ‘A Colt for all occasions’

Director: David Leitch

An action comedy that celebrates stunt performers and the genre in which they most often work. A Colt for all occasions may not have found many viewers in theaters, but that was by no means a reflection of its quality. The plot follows a stuntman through a series of misadventures while balancing his job, his love life, and the future of the film he is currently working on.

The mix of old-fashioned charm and modern technical wizardry generally works in A Colt for all occasionseven though a movie about a stuntman in 2024 seemed like a hard sell to audiences. It’s unlikely to launch a franchise or anything, but as a standalone film (admittedly based on a 1980s TV series) A Colt for all occasions Is is fun and has a lot to admire, a pretty strong action/comedy film.

5 ‘Twisters’

Director: Lee Isaac Chung

Secure, Twisters can best be defined as a disaster film, but also has a lot of spectacle and excitement to offer and because of these characteristics is also considered an action/adventure film. It is a kind of sequel to 1996 TwistersHowever, it is about various characters getting into similar situations as in the original film, since the focus of the films is on the storm chasers.

Twisters a certain level of tension remains throughout due to the natural disaster (or series of natural disasters) instead of the usual idea from disaster movies of hiding from natural disastersThe cast is good, the pace is good and the film is entertaining overall. It shows that interest in the genre has by no means completely dried up, even if disaster films are not quite as common in the 2020s as they were in other decades.

4 ‘Civil War’

Director: Alex Garland

Appropriately, considering the title, Civil War is first and foremost a war film (and thriller) that is meant to push the United States to the brink of another civil war. Viewers have a front row seat to the whole thing, as Civil War focuses on a group of journalists covering the events who embark on a dangerous journey to Washington DC because it seems to be only a matter of time before the President is overthrown.

It’s probably the film that most closely resembles a blockbuster to date, with an impressive sense of scale throughout the film and some truly intense scenes. The film doesn’t get big enough to feel like an action movie until the final act, but the final scenes of the film are action-packedwith the third act of Civil War it feels like a particularly nerve-wracking rollercoaster ride.

3 ‘Ape Man’

Director: Dev Patel

Co-produced by the filmmaker Jordan Peele, Monkey Man was also the directorial debut of Daniela Pichlerwho also stars in the film (and is probably best known for his appearances in other films such as Slumdog Millionaire And The Green Knight). His character in Monkey Man is a man who barely makes a living by getting beaten up in an underground fight club. He has a dramatic past and hidden depths that become more and more apparent as the film progresses.

Eventually, Monkey Man turns into a revenge film of sorts, with the fight club sequences giving way to more elaborate (and equally brutal) action sequences as it progresses. It is raw, strange and quite gripping, even This suggests great potential for Patel as a director should he continue to pursue the path of directing action/thriller films.

2 “Dune: Part 2”

Director: Denis Villeneuve

The goal for Dune – Part Two was still more action-oriented than the already very good dune (2021), which prepared a lot that later paid off. The first film was by no means lacking in fight scenes, but in Dune – Part Twoincluding a large battle scene shortly before the climax and numerous smaller war/fight scenes before that.

Paul Atreides is out for revenge in this film, and he gets it and more by instigating rebellions and eventually leading an army. The dune The duology is of course worthwhile when you look at both parts together, but there are clear differences between the two, which ultimately ensures Dune – Part Two is even more convincing in terms of spectacle and explosive action.

1 “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga”

Director: George Miller

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga had a lot to do as it would always be compared with the comparison Mad Max: Fury Roadwhich came out almost a decade ago and today feels like one of the best action movies of all time. Maybe Furious cannot call itself such a prestigious area, but it is still exciting, visually impressive and moving and offers plenty of spectacle and cathartic scenes.

The whole thing works as an effective origin story for the character Furiosa and leads almost exactly to the point where the main narrative of Fury Road really gets going. Those who are primarily interested in imaginative chases and well-used special effects will also benefit Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga largely satisfied. Of the action films released so far in 2024, it feels like the most exciting pure action film to come out yet (especially given the arguably superior Dune – Part Two is first and foremost a science fiction film and only secondarily an action film).
