“That’s the hard work he does in training.”

By Peter Weis@PeterVicey
After the 24-year-old scored his first Bundesliga goal in just over three years, SV Werder Bremen head coach Ole Werner praised Felix Agu for his hard work to get back to form. Agu’s first league goal came against Augsburg in January 2021. He scored the second goal against the same opponent.

Werner noted that the way Agu scored after a cross from his right-back partner Mitchell Weiser was no fluke. Both players and coaches feel that this season could produce something special. Agu seems to be on an upward trajectory

When former German U21 international Felix Agu scored his first Bundesliga goal against Augsburg on matchday 16 of the 2020/21 season, the then promising German youth international could not have guessed that his second league goal would not come until three and a half years later. The fact that it was scored against the same opponent was a strange coincidence.

After playing regularly for Bremen in the second German league the following season, injuries and problems with form prevented Agu from making many appearances in Bremen’s first season back in the first league. Last year was different. Finally fit again, Agu was still unable to secure a regular place in the team. Despite this, he managed three assists in the second half of the season when he played as a reliever.

The Hanseatic League was so pleased that they were able to sign him to a contract extension during the season break. The left-back, who is used in the starting eleven by head coach Ole Werner, has seen his estimated market value rise to 4 million euros, the highest level of his career. For both Agu and his coach, the goal that opened the scoring in the 2-2 draw with Augsburg was hopefully a sign of a new beginning.

“Sometimes you just wake up with a good feeling,” said Agu, quoted by Tim Lüddecke from Kicker. “I’ve had several balls like that that didn’t go in. This time it worked. I know there’s competition for my position, but that pushes you to the limit. No player should feel safe in their position.”

“He can use his speed well and often appears in these situations,” said Werner about his player’s record. “That is the result of the hard work he does in training. He takes a lot of these crosses on his feet. I am pleased that this is paying off for him relatively early on. Hopefully it will give him a boost.”
