Let’s talk about Texas Longhorns football before the presidential debate
Who needs a debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump? Before tonight’s presidential debate, the Statesman is hosting a debate with topics from Texas football.
The Texas football team passed its first test of the season with flying colors when it went to the Big House in Ann Arbor and defeated Michigan 31-12.
Next up, they face UTSA, a team that gave them some trouble the last time they visited Darrell K Royal Memorial Stadium. In 2022, the Roadrunners had Frank Harris, the best quarterback in their history, while the Longhorns were on the road with Hudson Card after Quinn Ewers’ injury in Week 1.
In 2024, however, the situation looks very different. Texas, currently ranked No. 3 in the latest US LBM Coaching Poll, has reached its peak form after reaching the College Football Playoffs.

Ewers has two more years of experience and is currently the favorite to win the Heisman Trophy. The Longhorns have one of the best offensive lines in the country and their defensive line features Trey Moore, the UTSA transfer who recorded 14 sacks for the Roadrunners in 2023.
UTSA won its first game of the season against Kennesaw State before being beaten 49-10 by Texas State. The Longhorns are considered clear favorites, but on Monday coach Steve Sarkisian had his team watch the closing moments of Notre Dame’s Week 2 loss to Northern Illinois.
“I showed the clip of the field goal. And I showed the clip of Northern Illinois storming the field,” Sarkisian said. “We’re not entitled to anything … we have to earn the win here Saturday night.”
