FRANKLIN, Tenn. – The Texas A&M women’s golf team was led Friday by sophomore Cayetana Fernández García-Poggio, who shot 69, or 3-under par, in the first round of the Mason Rudolph Championship at Legends Club.

“I’m really happy with our result and we gained some momentum towards the end of the round,” said head coach Gerrod Chadwell said. “We didn’t play our best. They sped up the greens and we didn’t really adjust well. In the end we felt more comfortable and hopefully we can carry that over to tomorrow. This result was a step in the right direction.”

As a team, Texas A&M shot 1-under-par 287 and was tied for 12th place at the end of the first day. South Carolina and Mississippi State led the field at 12-under-par 276. Fernández García-Poggio delivered a bogey-free scorecard marked by three birdies on holes 4, 6 and 11. The Madrid, Spain native was tied for 12th place and three strokes behind the individual leader.

Adela Cernousek began the round with an early double bogey on hole 2, but fought back under par with birdies on holes 7 and 8 and two more birdies on holes 17 and 18, reaching a score of 2 under par 70. The All-American and reigning national champion defended her shared 22nd place.

Kynadie Adams was two strokes over par on hole 15, but managed a birdie and finished the round with a 4 on the par-5 18th for a tie score of 72. Adams was tied for 47th on Saturday.

Lauren Nguyen And Vanessa Borovilos rounded off the lineup with a shared 74th and sole 88th place respectively.
