Texas A&M Aggies hold out until the end and win at home against Bowling Green

It may not have looked pretty, but the Texas A&M Aggies earned their third consecutive win of the season, this time at home against Bowling Green.

The Aggies needed a win going into the game to keep their momentum going, a week before they had to head to Arlington to face the Arkansas Razorbacks. The game against Bowling Green was supposed to give them a little respite after their visit to the Swamp, but it proved to be almost more daunting.

The Falcons stayed close throughout the game thanks to a 250-yard passing game by Connor Bazelak, but ultimately lost 26-20 and fell to 1-2 on the season.

After an impressive performance last week, Marcel Reed forced Mike Elko into action by deciding that each week the starting lineup would be decided during the game. This week, it was Reed who got the chance to continue his winning streak against Conner Weigman, and he delivered.

The freshman threw for 173 yards and two touchdowns – reaching both Jahdae Walker and Theo Melin Ohrstrom through the air – while also utilizing his legs and nearly reaching the 100-yard mark in the running game on the night, leading the Aggies in that category.

Texas A&M started fast, marching down the field with an opening 11-play drive that ended with a pass touchdown, but it wasn’t until early in the second quarter that they scored again when Randy Bond made his first of four field goals of the game.

Despite the offensive stagnation, the Aggies’ defense managed to keep Bowling Green under control in the first half, allowing them only one field goal, but that streak ended almost immediately.

The Falcons gained an additional 10 yards on the second-half kickoff, and Bazelak flexed his arm on the ensuing play and found Harold Fannin Jr. for a 65-yard touchdown that kept the Aggies on tenterhooks.

The answer? An eight-play drive down the field that yielded Reed’s second touchdown of the night and gave the Aggies a 20-10 lead.

Bowling Green immediately responded with a touchdown of their own – this time a 40-yard touchdown by running back Rahkeem Smith – but after that neither side could find the end zone.

Two more field goals from Bond put the Aggies at 26, while another from the Falcons at the very end of the game after a recovery of turnovers put them at 20. Texas A&M earned its third home win of the season, capping its fourth of the season.

Next up for the Aggies is a trip to Arlington to face the Arkansas Razorbacks before returning to Kyle Field for a test against the red-hot Missouri Tigers.

Kick-off for the previous match next Saturday is scheduled for the afternoon. The exact time is yet to be announced.
