Tesla deploys rare mobile megacharger for electric trucks in Utah

Tesla has launched a rare new mobile megacharger in Utah to charge Tesla’s semi-electric trucks.

Tesla Semi, Tesla’s Class 8 electric truck, is still only used internally within its own operations and by a handful of customers for testing purposes.

After years of delays, production of the electric truck is finally set to begin next year when production starts at a new factory in the US state of Nevada.

That goal is fast approaching, but one big piece of the electric truck puzzle is still missing: long-distance charging.

Electric trucks are becoming increasingly popular, but are mostly limited to closed-loop applications, such as between distribution centers within the same company. Electric trucks are advantageous in these applications because the route is predictable and charging can be done while loading and unloading at the sites or overnight when not in use.

Electric trucks have not yet become established in long-distance transport because there is a lack of fast-charging solutions for them.

Technically, commercial electric trucks could use existing electric vehicle charging networks like Tesla’s Superchargers, but these aren’t designed to accommodate trucks and their charging rate isn’t high enough to get them on the road quickly.

Tesla’s solution is the Megacharger, a charging station similar to the Tesla Supercharger that enables a higher charging rate and is designed to charge the Tesla Semi.

So far, Tesla has only put a few of these charging stations into operation, including a Supercharger in Baker, California, and at PepsiCo, one of Tesla’s first test partners for the Tesla Semi.

Now we learn that Tesla has deployed a new mobile Megacharger at its Supercharger in Tooele, Utah (via camthehombre on X):

Tesla is known to deploy similar mobile Superchargers that fit on a rack and can be deployed in specific locations when demand for Superchargers is too high in the area. However, in this case, we can see that the connectors are not NACS like regular Superchargers, but the Megacharger connector for the Tesla Semi.

It’s not clear why this is being used in Utah. Most of the known Tesla semi-trucks currently in use are used in Tesla’s own fleet between Nevada and California to transport parts between factories, and in California between PepsiCo’s factories and distribution centers.
