Terrifying simulation shows exactly what happened when a man’s phone suddenly exploded in his pocket

A simulation has shown what happens when a man’s phone “explodes” in his pocket, triggering a “new fear” among social media users.

A simulation shared on YouTube has shown what it might have looked like in 2016 when a man’s phone caught fire and “exploded” in his pocket.

On May 30, 2016, construction worker Daniel Ramirez was working in Ohio, USA, when his Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge – which was in his right front pocket – started “whistling, screeching and vibrating” and he saw “smoke coming out of his pocket,” Class Action reports.

The report continued: “As he reached into his pocket to remove the phone, Ramirez suffered burns to his right hand. Without warning, the S7 Edge exploded and caught fire while still in his pants pocket, melting his boxer shorts and pants on his leg and causing him to suffer second and third degree burns.

“He suffered severe and permanent burns to his groin, legs and lower back, which required extensive skin grafting and will require extensive physical therapy in the future.”

A simulation has now been uploaded to YouTube recreating what happened to Ramirez.

The video shows a cartoon man with a phone in his pocket. Smoke rises and the man screams as the phone catches fire.

One YouTube user commented: “New fear sparked: your phone starts burning out of nowhere.”

“Bro, the fact that my phone overheats like this sometimes and the character looks exactly like me scares the hell out of me,” added another.

The YouTube video claims that the phone “exploded” because “the battery housing on this particular model was too small.”

“This caused the electrodes inside to bend and come into contact with each other. This caused a short circuit which eventually overheated the battery, and this started a cycle of chemical reactions that generated more and more heat until the phone eventually exploded,” it continued.

However, this was the statement Samsung later released regarding another of its phones – the Galaxy Note 7 – which was discontinued.

The Galaxy Note 7 had been recalled in the months following the incident over battery concerns, but Samsung said phone owners could exchange their phone for a Samsung Galaxy S7 or a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge.

A class action lawsuit has been filed against Samsung, claiming that Ramirez’s Samsung phone caused him “severe burns,” and demanding that Samsung address battery safety not only in the Galaxy Note 7, but also the S7 and S7 Edge.

According to the case text, the case was later closed.

A Samsung spokesperson told USA Today at the time: “Recent reports suggesting that Samsung’s battery problem is not unique to the Galaxy Note 7 are incorrect.”

“The battery cell issue disclosed earlier this month is limited to one battery manufacturer for a specific phone model.”
