Tennis star Taylor Fritz talks about ‘great’ Olympics, self-imposed pressure and what could make the sport ‘more exciting’

Taylor Fritz just won a medal in Paris and now has bigger goals in mind.

Fritz represented the United States at the Olympics earlier this month, and while it didn’t go quite as he had hoped, it was still an unforgettable experience to represent the Stars and Stripes.

“It was fantastic. I always enjoy playing for the USA. I always feel like I play well when I play for the USA. It’s my first Olympics and I’m at least happy that I was able to bring home a medal,” Fritz said in a recent interview with Fox News Digital. He and fellow American Tommy Paul took bronze in the men’s doubles.

Fritz has a pretty busy tennis schedule as he is now preparing for the US Open. The Olympics were essentially his fifth Grand Slam this year and Fritz, a partner of Eight Sleep, prioritizes his sleep to maximize his potential.

“I make it a point to align myself with brands that I personally use and that I believe can help me. When it comes to sleep, I think sleep is one of the most important things, if not the most important thing, when it comes to performing well as an athlete,” Fritz said. “Even just in general, it’s so important if you’re not an athlete. Optimizing sleep and seeing all the data around sleep was huge for me, and I just think as an athlete, it makes a lot of sense to partner with them.”

Fritz was able to take an Eight Sleep cooling capsule with him to Paris to beat the scorching heat while he tried to get some sleep abroad. “The sleeping conditions there were not ideal,” he said.

But despite the scheduling worries and difficult living conditions, Fritz did not miss the games.

“I didn’t play the last tournament and I’ll be 30 years old at the next one, so I was determined to go to this tournament. As for the timing… it’s not ideal in the tennis calendar, but it’s one of those things, I really didn’t want to miss the opportunity to go there this year,” he said.

Fritz has not yet overcome the hump, even though he is ranked 5th in the world. He has not yet made it to the semifinals of a Grand Slam.

It’s been a while since the face of tennis was an American, but Fritz feels no pressure to become one for the country’s sake – it’s just a title he wants to hold.

“We all want to make it. But it’s more for ourselves. I want to make it for myself…” he said. “That’s what I want – I want to win a Grand Slam tournament, I want to be the greatest, but that’s the pressure I put on myself to achieve that.”

Considering that, as Fritz said, in any tournament, “everyone loses but one person,” it’s important to keep a cool head in an individual sport. However, Fritz has a good idea of what constitutes success.

“I think to take something positive, I think I have to do well or at least better than my ranking… There are always, often, positives to take. But I usually get pretty far in tournaments and my ranking at the end of the year has to be higher than the year before, otherwise I’m pretty disappointed.”

Now it’s time for the US Open. It’s the last Grand Slam tournament of the year and Fritz’s last chance to make a serious name for himself. At the same time, Fritz also wants to see a reasonable number of players competing for Grand Slam tournaments, and not the same “one, two, three people as before.”

“I think it’s more fun when it’s not always one person winning everything. I think it’s more exciting for the fans when you go to a big tournament and eight different people can win the title,” Fritz said. “I think it’s more exciting and crazy things can happen.”

However, Fritz wants to etch his name in the history books and bring home a win in Queens next month.

“I’m here a week early and I’m excited to get out there, have a good week of training and get everything sorted. I’m confident and ready to go,” he said. “I just need to take it one game at a time, not look too far ahead and once I get to the quarter-finals, which I’ve done a few times, I just need that one game where I play well.”

“Just play well, and once I get over that hurdle, I think it’s always a lot easier to repeat those things once I’ve done them once or twice. So I just have to keep putting myself in the situation, keep playing good games if I get to the quarterfinals, but also just take it one thing at a time.

“And sleep. That’s the most important thing.”
