BAY COUNTY, Fla. (WMBB) – A woman was injured Saturday on Thomas Drive when she collided with a tow truck.

Florida Highway Patrol officials said a tow truck arrived on scene shortly after 5:30 a.m. to recover one of the vehicles arrested for drunken driving several hours earlier. The truck was parked in the left center lane with its yellow lights on and flashing.

The tow truck driver got out of his vehicle and coordinated the recovery with the police officer on site heading west along the road, officials said.

According to a press release, a 65-year-old woman from Memphis, Tennessee, was driving an SUV eastbound on Thomas Drive toward Cresent Street.

The driver of the SUV failed to maintain her lane and yield as she approached the emergency vehicles. As a result, she veered into the middle lane, causing the left front of the vehicle to collide with the bed of the tow truck, FHP officials wrote.

The driver of the SUV suffered serious injuries, officials confirmed.

The driver was extricated from the vehicle by a police officer, a Bay County Sheriff’s deputy on the scene and a bystander. The police officer rendered aid until Bay County EMS arrived.
