Tennessee vs. Oklahoma Betting, Predictions, Odds, Tips, Lines

College Gameday heads to Norman, Oklahoma, to face two top-ranked opponents: the No. 6 Tennessee Volunteers and the No. 15 Oklahoma Sooners. The Sooners are making their SEC debut.

Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel led Oklahoma to the 2000 national championship as the Sooners’ signal caller, while Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables was an assistant there at the time.

Heupel’s Volunteers have been an offensive machine this season, scoring 191 points, outscoring their opponents by 178 points and scoring 23 more points than any other FBS team.

Meanwhile, the Sooners defense under Venables leads the FBS in forced turnovers (10) and points from turnovers (41).

Pamela Maldonado’s tip of the game: Oklahoma (+6.5)

Tennessee had one of the easiest schedules to start the season, playing against teams with a combined record of 2-7 through the first three weeks. Now, rookie quarterback Nico Iamaleava faces a real challenge in his first road game. With this being Oklahoma’s SEC conference debut, expect an electric home atmosphere. While Iamaleava has impressed as the leader of the Vols’ offense, his experience is still limited. He will now face a more sophisticated defense and increased pressure situations. Iamaleava has a 71.6% completion percentage, but that drops to 37.5% under pressure, and he has thrown one interception.

Oklahoma’s pass rush is impressive. Pro Football Focus ranks it 20th and ranks third nationally in sacks. This unit will challenge Tennessee’s pass defense. R Mason Thomas, Oklahoma’s best pass rusher, showed his skills against Tulane with three sacks, a QB hit and a hurry in just 23 pass rushing snaps. His impact goes beyond sacks and extends to tackles for loss, forced fumbles and pass breakups. In addition, Venables’ defense excels at forcing turnovers, which is the most in the country.

Expect Tennessee to rely on its running game, which ranks third in yards per carry and is led by Dylan Sampson, making for a classic showdown. Oklahoma has PFF’s second-best run defense and hasn’t allowed a single rushing touchdown to date. If the Sooners can stifle Tennessee’s running game and force them to become one-dimensional, that could put more pressure on Iamaleava. Back the underdog in a tightly contested SEC matchup. The +210 moneyline is worth a bet.

Betting trends

  • Tennessee has never been more than seven points ahead of a seeded team on the road since the FBS/FCS split in 1978.

  • Oklahoma is a one-touchdown underdog at home for the first time since 1998. If the line gets to +8.5, it would be their biggest role as a home underdog since 1997.

  • As a highly ranked team, Oklahoma will be the biggest underdog since the FBS and FCS split.

  • Oklahoma has a 25-13-2 ATS record against ranked teams over the last 10 seasons, second best among power conference teams.
